Most Helpful Customer Reviews

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful By Peter Besenbruch on August 28, 2012
This is a collection of Bach recordings produced by the German Bach Soloists, led by Helmut Winschermann. The set includes the Brandenburg Concerti, the four Orchestral Suites, the three violin concerti, plus various other assorted concerti. All in all, a pretty good assortment of Bach's orchestral works for not too much money.

The performances are uniformly good, and conventional. The tempi are not too fast, not to slow. While played on modern instruments, the violins tend to play marcato in the fast passages. When the bass instruments don't have the melody, they don't sustain. They use a fair amount of vibrato, typical of informed modern instrument performances.

The soloists are a Who's Who of second tier musicians. The violin soloists, Ernoe Sebestyen, various Kussmauls, and Christian Altenberger are very good. The one weakness is Johann Sonnleitner on the harpsichord. You notice it especially in Brandenburg Concerto 5. His playing is flat and dull. Compare it to the concerto for harpsichord and two recorders (Bach's retread of Brandenburg Concerto 4) in the same set. That concerto features Bob van Asperen, who teams up with Kees Boeke and Walter van Hauve for a recording that simply sparkles.

Paul Meisen and Ingo Goritzki anchor the flute and oboe sections. Wolfgang Basch, perennial soloist for countless budget recordings, does a very good, clean job, both in the Orchestral Suites 3 and 4, and in the killer Brandenburg Concerto 2. In addition, the recording engineers somehow managed to balance Basch's trumpet with van Hauve's recorder, making this one of the best renditions of the second Brandenburg that you can get on modern instruments.

In short, you may find better recordings out there, but they won't be consistently better, and those you do find will cost a lot more.
