The Hues Corporation is a group whose claim to fame is a little disco song you may have heard...can anyone say, "Rock The Boat?" This internationally known disco hit is a 160 degrees turn from the title song of an album that I consider an undiscovered gem, "Freedom for the Stallion". It was a minor chart hit for them and a powerful ballad that has been covered by many artists such as Three Dog Night & Boz Scaggs. Their harmonies could rival The 5th Dimension, Friends of Distinction and even Shalamar! The album itself is a rainbow of music that colors your mind in many directions. It's kinda funny that they are considered a disco group because of 'Rock the Boat' and their follow Up, 'Rockin' Soul,' because this album mainly features powerful story telling sung in gospel, pop and soul. One of my favorite album cut is the dreamy "Off My Cloud" but "Miracle Maker (Sweet Soul Shaker)," "Bound On A Reason" "Live A Lie" "Salvation Lady" and "The Family" are equally powerful. I only mention these songs because they are among the 20 Classic tracks on this "best of" compilation, which goes to show how strong "Freedom" was musically.

Suprisingly, "Freedom for the Stallion" was never released on cd so buying this compilation is the closest anyone will ever get to listening to the "Freedom" cd. It's strange that "The Masters" contains their dance hits, "Rockin' Soul" and "Love Corporation" but, misses the boat on one of the Hues Corporation's biggest disco hit, "I Caught Your Act" - which can be found on a different compilation, "Golden Classics". Was this an oversight or a shrewd move to make rabid fans like me buy the "Golden Classics" also? Hint: I have both.
