This catalog for a show of 150 American watercolors from the Brooklyn Museum of Art's collection of nearly 800 works is more than an exhibition monograph. It is a celebration of the museum's active participation in collecting watercolors and a reminder of its role in recognizing and establishing them as a prime American medium. In seven well-documented essays, Ferber and Gallati trace Brooklyn's role in the early purchase of works by such artists as Sargent, Homer, and major figures of the 20th century. A chronology distills events and provides a framework from which Brooklyn's contributions to art in America can be told.
