Editorial Reviews

Review

"Perrone analyzed hundreds of contemporary song texts to provide Englishreaders with a window into the very important musical-poetic world of contemporary and artistic Brazil. The book is informative, easy to read, and of great value in understanding many sociological aspects of Brazil's recent history."oHispanic American Historical Review "Perrone's highly competent, well-written, and informative work is the first full-length study in English of contemporary Brazilian popular music. After a brief historical overview of this music, the author ... offers an in-depth discussion of the careers and works of six major songwriter/performers of the 1965o1985 period: Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Milton Nascimento, Joao Bosco, and Aldir Blanc... The book also includes a useful bibliography and discography, an index, and good photographs that will make the topic come alive... Highly recommended."oChoice

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Study of Brazilian Lyrics, March 31, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Masters of Contemporary Brazilian Song: MPB, 1965-1985 (Paperback)
Perrone's academic study of six leading Brazilian musicians and their lyrics (song texts) is a remarkable, groundbreaking effort that demonstrates the high level of lyric writing in Brazilian popular music in the 1970s and 1980s. An essential volume for anyone interested in Brazilian music and it fits well with the other classic study, "The Brazilian Sound" (Temple University Press), which focuses on the music.
