An interesting twist on magic...,

M. Coleman Easton's book Masters of Glass takes a unique re-imagining of the concept of the fantasy wizard, for in this tale the titular "Masters of Glass" are the "Vigens," expert glass-makers who make special talismans made to control creatures whose eye color the talisman matches. The old man Watnojat, the Vigen of Darst, finds himself in a predicament when the monstrous "Lame Ones" kill his apprentice, and he has no more of the rare pigment astablak needed to match the Lame Ones' eye color. As an old man with no apprentice and no longer trusted by the villagers of Darst, he hesitantly takes on Kyala as his new apprentice, the first girl ever chosen, and together they set out on a long and dangerous journey to find the last bastion of astablak left in the mountains.
The adventure is compelling and the idea of magical glass talismans is a fresh, interesting one. For this, Masters of Glass is certainly worth a look, but be warned: there are a couple of sex scenes, so this is not for children. |
