1) HOMECOMING- I don't mind it when a horror director and his or her horror film includes an intent to make the viewer think. I DO mind it when said director and film clearly want to make me think his or her way. It's tricky- I realize- to tackle a controversial topic, one which polarizes public opinion, without being accused of either playing it too safe or being too heavy-handed. However, being subtle and respecting viewers' intelligence is a hell of a lot more easy to pair with a "message" than THIS. It's too bad, because there are a few really good actors here who do their able best. And there are some interesting ideas as well. However, Gordon lost me as soon as the zombie soldier is taken in out of the rain by the mom & pop owners of the diner. And I actually sympathize with much of what is behind Gordon's clearly intense opinions. And it doesn't help when there are scenes with fictional versions of Larry King, etc. Either get Larry King to parody himself or avoid it altogether. Give me a George Romero zombie movie over this any day. Entertain, disturb and inspire me to QUESTIONS what is happening to the society around me. And don't do it with a HUGE sledgehammer.

1) PICK ME UP- Nasty, extremely offensive in parts, funny and very well photographed and directed. Doesn't overstep its modest bounds. It's an updated EC Comics-type multiple twist story. The three principal actors are great, especially Michael Moriarity, who shows just the right amount of restraint in his performance (something he doesn't always demonstrate). Not too much to dislike here- a few annoying and poorly-acted stereotype supporting performances, a recycled shot of a full moon with mist drifting across it that looks almost exactly like the one in the other film on this disc! This is an excellent use of the just-under-an-hour running time and a sick surprise from director Cohen. Be warned, though, this does NOT pull the punches in one of its murder sequences. Brrrrr...
