Elysian Fields!,
By Charles J. Murnick "Charles J.Murnick Medie... (Shreveport,Louisiana) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Masters, Monsters & Mazes (Audio CD)
Back in the 80's I was infatuated with David Munrow's "The Art of Courtly Love", which featured virelais, ars subtilior, chansons of various types. The musicianship, always excellent, carried me away,as did the voices.
Since then, there has been the Ferrara ensemble, which did similar work, and excellently. But the sad and simple fact is,both these groups no longer exist. Then I discovered the Newberry Consort of Chicago, and their countertenor/male soprano/falsettist Drew Minter. Now with the group Trefoil, along with his fellow countertenor and soprano Marcia Young,he has appeared on two CD's.I have to say that his work stacks up very well next to David Munrow's.But such is his vocal prowess and passion for music,I have to say I much prefer him, despite the smaller ensemble.I hope to hear him and his cohorts for many years hence. With excellent renditions of music by Machaut,Senleches,Cordier, and other composers of the age which would be immediately recognizable to those who know and value this music,it is an absolute gem!
