2.0 out of 5 stars Renaissance Fumbles October 17, 2013
Format:Audio CD
In the past year or so, the Renaissance albums have taken a turn in the direction of an after-party mix. While the earliest sets were club thumping, dance driven concoctions, now they seem to be aiming for drowsier, dreamier territories. It took me a bit to get used to the change, but I can still see the skill and beauty in the craftsmanship, even if I kind of wish they'd get back to the more uptempo stuff.

This album, however ... man. I don't know. I don't think I've ever listened to something and been simultaneously confused and bored. But here it is.

I really don't know Francois K or his work, so I can't measure it on those terms. He definitely seems like an experimental sort, and good for him, but whatever he was aiming for with these discs, well, he didn't hit it.

Disc One is the most confusing. It starts with C-grade jazz/lounge (Jazzanova's always been hit or miss with me), the cheese level really going up with Francois's own muzak-heavy "Mystical Lady." This is mixed very awkwardly into "Chords," a minimal downtempo number that makes you think the set is about to go somewhere moodier and more interesting. But, nope! Francois switches gears again (and does it, again, with pretty clumsy mixing), and we enter a long block of annoyingly repetitive minimal tech house starting with the aptly named "Drone Logic." Although these tunes sound a lot more like what you'd expect on a Renaissance album, they are so redundant and featureless that it becomes grating. "Walk Alone" is the only time Francois introduces some complexity in the mix, and what a relief. The song has the same dirty depth as the previous four, but it has more variety to its layering, making it groovier and more addictive.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best Masters mix May 8, 2013
By DJ
Format:MP3 Music
I will admit that I haven't been a big Francios K fan but after seeing the track list I figured this would be a quality mix. Now on Mix 1 the first mix from track 1 to 2 was just awful and had no cohesion to what so ever. After that it gets better but I just didn't feel any real flow to it, it was just one track after another with again no cohesion to it. All in all its not a bad mix and there's some top quality tracks on the album but after mixes from Nick Warren, Hernan Cattaneo and Tale OF Us' Mixed Collection this comp just wasn't up to par imo.

5.0 out of 5 stars a master May 4, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I have been listening to francois k for along time.it seems he gets better with age.the first disc has his eye on some of the new sounds coming out of the underground, and th second is house at its best.this is a beautiful timeless mix you won't regret.Ido wish they gave u the songlist so you wouldn't have to look it up.enjoy one of th best mixes of the year.
