Editorial Reviews

Masters of Sex stars Golden Globe® and BAFTA Award nominee Michael Sheen and acclaimed actress Lizzy Caplan, who portray the real-life pioneers of the science of human sexuality, Dr. William Masters and Virginia Johnson. The series chronicles the unusual lives, romance and pop culture trajectory of Masters and Johnson and the effect their research had on the family and colleagues around them. Their study ignited a sexual revolution and took them from a Midwestern teaching hospital in St. Louis to the cover of Time magazine. Also starring Caitlin FitzGerald, Teddy Sears and Nicholas D’Agosto. Guest Starring two-time Golden Globe® winner Beau Bridges.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing and very thought provoking! January 7, 2014
By Sasha
Format:Blu-ray
Masters of Sex is my favorite show of 2013. It's eye opening to be shown a time when women had very few rights and almost no one had a clue about their sexuality or their own bodies for that matter. Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan are fantastic. Their chemistry is so palpable and their acting is top notch.

Speaking of top notch Allison Janney is absolutely heart breaking in her role as the provost's wife. She makes you ache for her. The sadness of her situation is deeply felt thanks to her incredible acting. She moved me to tears more then once. I loved her performance.

This show despite it's time frame is so relevant today. We owe a lot to the brave research of Masters and Johnson. Master's of Sex brings their lives and struggles to life in such a well done manner. I absolutely cannot wait for Season Two to begin!

5.0 out of 5 stars My Clitoris Beat My Vagina? That's Crazy! January 5, 2014
By Sarah
Format:DVD
Dr. William Masters wants to know what happens to the body during sex. To find out, he and his assistant, Virginia Johnson begin to observe anonymous couples and singles as they engage in various kinds of sex. But things get complicated when Masters and Johnson decide to participate in their own study.

Michael Sheen is dead on as the coldly serious William Masters. He deserves his Golden Globe nomination and if there is any justice should win. Lizzy Caplan as Virginia Johnson exhibits a warmth unknown to her counterpart. They are opposites driven by a common goal. Caplan should have been nominated for a Golden Globe and should have won. How could she have been overlooked? For me, the Golden Globes have lost all credibility. Masters of Sex is easily the best dramatic series on television.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best new shows, period. June 25, 2014
Format:Blu-ray
Sex.

Let's just think about that word for a moment and what it means. To the world of today, sex seems to be just another word, because it pervades every part of our life; our literature, our news, our culture. in the world of this show though, set in the 1950's, sex was something that married people did merely to conceive a child, and no one EVER talked about it, much less studied it. However, when William Masters and Virginia Johnson started their pioneering work at Washington University, they were on the edge of a revolution that would change the way that couples all over the country regarded sex. And while this is the basis for Showtime's brilliant new drama MASTERS OF SEX, it's only part of what the show is actually about, which is one of the things that makes it so good.

Masters (the brilliant Michael Sheen) is one of the country's leading obstetricians, celebrated to his abilities to help couples conceive. He won't deny anyone his care. His brilliance also has led him to become incredibly arrogant and dismissive. His wife Libby (Caitlin Fitzgerald) is an intelligent, beautiful, and somewhat antiseptic woman who is proud of her husband but ashamed of herself in her inability to conceive for him, believing she's incapable of pregancy. Masters' young protege, Dr. Ethan Haas (Nicholas D'Agosto) is a amazing young surgeon who is looking for the right woman. Due to the nature of his work, Masters wants to begin an official study of sex and all its aspects with funding from the university, which goes right up against the grain of the medical school's provost, Barton Scully (Beau Bridges, in his best role in years).

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Series June 14, 2014
By Laura
Format:DVD
I watched this on Channel 4 (UK) and it was excellent. Michael Sheen is great in everything but he excels in his role as the very serious Dr Bill Masters. He hires Virginia Johnson (Lizzie Caplan) as his Secretary. Virginia is a modern woman very in touch with her sexual self! Bill is married and he and his wife are trying for a baby. What comes to light in that respect makes the viewer see Bill as a rather cold and calculating individual. The fact this story is based on real life couple Williams and Johnson makes you realise that somewhere in the coming Seasons, Bill's poor wife is going to get terribly hurt. In fact quite a few characters will be effected by Masters and Johnson's actions.

Masters wants to know what happens to the body during sex. He is not exactly personable with the people he enlists to take part in his study. Realising Virginia is a people person, he enlists her as his Assistant. They begin experiments on prostitutes, anonymous couples and single men and women and observe their bodies responses during sex and masturbation. There are lots of sexual scenes in this series but nothing offensive. As the series progresses you sense Bill becoming attracted and intrigued by Virginia. I didn't sense Virginia reciprocating with the attraction until near the end of the series but by then, she has befriended his wife so as I said before, I'm beginning to feel sorry for his wife especially as it's based on a true story. After a while of experimenting on others, Bill and Virginia decide to participate in their own study, having sex with each other and monitoring their responses. I did feel the chemistry between them. Lizzy Caplan is fantastic in her role as Virginia. She's super confident and I loved it when she stood up to Bill.
