Book Description

September 1, 2002
Over thirty prestige classes and 300 special maneuvers devoted to the use of weapons whose names you can't pronounce! Special maneuvers such as the "Three-fold Strike" and "Stick a Fork in Him, He's Done" help distinguish the glaive from the ranseur. Masters of Arms focuses on unusual weapons and those who master them. Combination maneuvers give you lots of different ways to devastate things while defensive maneuvers give you something to do while the monsters try to eat you. All the classes are designed with maximum flexibility and customizability in mind and most of their special abilities can double as new feats, so that those who don't wish to specialize in a prestige class can still expand their library of actions. For gamemasters the Alpha Beast provides a convenient way to upgrade a monster for close in fighting, whether using claws or teeth or tentacles. And the telekinesis master can make fighting demons a very different experience.

More About the Author

After the tedium of high school, and inspired by the great anti-war film Apocalypse Now, Steve Peterson joined the army. He served at Fort Benning, Georgia, on the demilitarized zone in Korea, and at the National Training Center in the Mojave desert.

After escape, he realized that sitting in a classroom wasn't so tedious after all and studied philosophy at UCLA, USC and Rutgers University-where he studied philosophy of space & time, philosophy of quantum mechanics, and cognitive science because philosophy simpliciter just wasn't obscure enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars DnD combat options, June 10, 2003

This review is from: Masters of Arms (d20 System) (Paperback)
If you like the combat aspect of DnD/D20 then this book is for you. You'll need to get your GM to allow the new rules and combat options first.
There are 5-6 pages on new combat options called Manuevers and action types. While very interesting, they could potentialy slow down the pace of combat as you figure the points required for each manuver. They do seem balanced, an example being a manuver that sacrifices attacks to deal more damage.
There are also some very unique prestige classes. The combo of new prestige classes and unique manuvers can really help to differentiate your character, especialy for a combat oriented one that would like to specialize in a specific weapon.
Masters of Arms has a prestige class for every major type of weapon, including: Axe, Bow, Dagger, Sai, Cloak, Glaive, Sword+Shield, Rapier, etc. In fact, there are 35 weapon specialist prestige classes.
All in all, an excellent fighter/combat orientied book of prestige classes.
