5.0 out of 5 stars About Time, December 24, 2003

I really loved this CD. Since I write for a living, I usually don't end up sending blathering reviews out of products I like.

Unfortunately, I really liked this title, and now I must write a review:

Whatever Messrs. Winstin and ERM did to pick out the repertoire - keep it up. These were inspired choices. I admired the juxtaposition of styles and it kept my interest throughout the opus.

Here's the question: Why is ERM the only one's to feature such fabulous work? I listen to a lot of recordings and, for the most part, they are way too tame.

Now, I am a man in my sixties and I shouldn't be jumping through hoops about this kind of stuff - but, damn it - it's really worth listening to a few dozen times - and thats a whole lot more than the other CD that came home with me the same day I bought this one.

Good show!

How many CD's have you listened to? Now take that number and divide it by the number of CD's you've listened to AND thought worthy of your attention.

Pretty small number, huh?

Well, Robert Ian Winstin's new "Masterworks of the New Era" is undoubtedly worth a listen, ot two, or - well, I'm on my fifth go-round!

This 2 CD set (a great price, by the way for two CD's) is full of absolutely stunning new works by, unfortunately, unknown composers.

That'll change quickly! With one listen to this set you'll see why ERM Media (Curious - what does ERM stand for?) has set out to showcase and profile these wonderful composers and their works - and this is only Volume One of the set - there are 11 (ELEVEN!) more to go!

Bravo to Maestro Winstin for his incredible conducting skills amply evident on this CD. (For those of you who are from Mars, Winstin is one of the very best interpreters of new music and one of the best composers of his generation. I loved his "Symphony #5" ...)

Bravos also to all of the absolutely wonderful composers listed on this disc - to name one would be to slight the others. Suffice it to say that all are well deserving to be on this first release of "Masterworks of the New Era" and the range of styles is fantastic. You'll hear neo-Romantic works side by side with iconoclastic jabs, chamber music along with vocal haikus. Very unusual and very, very interesting. It makes for an exciting listen!

If you are like me, you'll be taking everything else out of your CD changer and putting in these two "Masterworks" discs - what a fantastic set!

I can hardly wait for the second volume!
