I have found the Masterworks for a New Era cd series to be hit or miss: this particular volume was a miss. Very conventional-sounding music for the most part, with not too much of a "new era" quality about them. There were a couple of works of ineterst here, though. The "Petit Cirque" of Max Simoncic was a fun and catchy piece, that could have been written 100 years ago. The piece is a collection of scenes from a travelling circus. Very entertaining, and the catchy main theme stays in one's head. "Broken" by Mike Barnett refers to a psychological state. It's an abstract autobiographical piece of crisis and self-destruction. Barnett was inspired by a line from Steinbeck: "Most men, in their search for contentment, destroy themselves and fall wearily short of thier goals." Interesting piece, though I think it falls short of it's goals as well.

A frustrating thing about this series is that they often present just one or two movements of a larger work. The Scherzo from Floyd Barnes' Symphony 1 is an example here. One can't get an appreciation of the piece out of context. Considering that works with multiple movements are the norm rather than exception in classical music, I think ERM is passing over alot of new symphonies and quartets, etc, to cram as many single movement pieces on these discs as possible.
