Yasuda has worked extensively in interpreting Japanese No plays to Westerners and here gives us the benefit of his experience. Seventeen plays are grouped by type, analyzed and described, and translated complete with stage directions. Romanized Japanese and English are in parallel columns, the translation being not only accurate and felicitous but mirroring the syllabic structure of the original. As a tour de force, the author adds an 18th play in English of his own composition on Martin Luther King Jr., neatly replicating the No form, even to the embedded literary and historical references and wordplay. Even with extensive footnoting, this work assumes some knowledge of Japanese literature and language. With an exhaustive glossary and a selective bibliography, half English, half Japanese.
