5.0 out of 5 stars Essential past the PGY3 year
This is the surgical guide for more senior residents. Concise and comprehensive, I review it prior to nearly every case.

Well, it is hard to describe this book in one word. I have used it as a backup when all fails.

1-Format: each chapter has the main text, then an editor's note. Which is very nice since the editors (very experienced figures) put in their own opinion and discuss issues in the chapter; a nice touch albeit not always useful.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book, but..., July 5, 2011

Well, it is hard to describe this book in one word. I have used it as a backup when all fails.

1-Format: each chapter has the main text, then an editor's note. Which is very nice since the editors (very experienced figures) put in their own opinion and discuss issues in the chapter; a nice touch albeit not always useful.

2-Content: here is my problem, many chapters seem so outdated, I mean who is practicing vagotomies in the way described with such painful details? I have never seen such an operation in a decade! of course it may differ depending on practice location. Plus the femoral and inguinal hernia chapter is written by someone who performs tissue repairs as his main approach, he cites his results spanning the period from 1964 till the day the chapter was written. A lot has happened in that period and this is certainly not the mainstream approach in treating hernias. The author of this chapter admitts that this is his personal experience and the results are his personal series. This level of evidence is inappropriate for a textbook of this caliber.

On the other hand the HPB chapters were written by people like Fong and Blumgart; real figureheads and are very rich in details, again watch for some very outdated techniques.

Breast chapters...forget it! so outdated and useless.

3-Figures: most are great, many are redundant.

In short I would use this as a backup for those cases where you really can't find enough info elsewhere not even on line (very rarely). I would not pay the hefty price and actually buy the book but would accept it as a gift!

Good luck

This is a definite must buy for any young surgical apprentice. There are many operative surgery books however this is one of the few that you have clear, concise and useful diagrams and techniques. I highly recommend this book.

Surgery is a very broad subject as we all know. I do like the way the book is written. The authors give their opinions, the "way they do it" in a very personal manner. In fact they make you feel you are operating when you read about the techniques and the pitfalls. The chapter on Echinoccus cyst for example is probably the best one I have ever read on the topic. A real master piece. The book reads like a novel. The comments at the end of the chapters are unfortunately written in very small characters (too small for me). Those very useful comments should have been maybe linked to a website for reference.
A beautiful book not only for "residents" but for any surgeons!

5.0 out of 5 stars absolutely needed for any surgical resident., October 16, 2009

This book is absolutely essential for any general surgery resident. What makes it so highly valuable is that it has online access and therefore a resident can spend any downtime before a case reading online and reviewing for the case to be performed. This book, and its online access, will ensure that you don't go into any cases "cold".

I think this book is an excellent resource for surgery residents. It gives you valuable information on theoretical knowledge on different diseases, preoperative planning, postoperative management and surgical techniques. Expensive but worth the price.
