Worth the time and money,

This review is from: Mastery of Your Anxiety and Worry: Workbook (Treatments That Work) (Paperback)
At the request of my counselor, I purchased this workbook, and can I tell you how much it helped me master my anxiety. It's not a "block the anxiety" kind of book. Instead, the authors give you exercises to work with your anxiety - let it become part of you without tearing you apart.

Mastery of Your Anxiety and Worry,

This review is from: Mastery of Your Anxiety and Worry: Workbook (Treatments That Work) (Paperback)
My major HMO in Northern California uses this book for at least one of its overcoming anxiety classes. This workbook breaks down the symptoms and thinking errors that cause anxiety into simple, easy to understand chapters. Each chapter builds upon the previous one, so it is important to do the exercises in each chapter before progressing to the next chapter. It is a workbook, and it will require work. However, the work required will be worth it. This text helped me to finally understand my feelings and gave me very valuable techniques to employ to reduce the anxiety episodes I was having. I highly recommend this workbook to anyone struggling with anxiety !

The book is really helpful, but will require a little homework. It not only helps you understand what is going on, but it guides you in an easy to follow format on how to feel better. It is not the typical "self help book". It allows you to feel what you feel, instead of someone just telling you how you feel. This book is great on your on or to work through with a professional.

Works even if you don't have GAD,
This review is from: Mastery of Your Anxiety and Worry: Workbook (Treatments That Work) (Paperback)
I've never been officially diagnosed with GAD, but I am bipolar and have suffered from panic attacks in the past. I am currently on medication for all of this, and recently my doctor added an anti-anxiety medication that relieved some of my symptoms, so it's safe to say that my depression is partially caused by anxiety.
This book will help you if anxiety/worry is part of your everyday life. I personally love workbook-type treatments because I get more out of them than just reading a book on theories of how to make my mood/life better. Having studied psychology, I recognize that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is one of the most effective treatments for mood issues. (That being said, if you have suicidal thoughts or signs of mania or hallucinations or delusions, SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY.) This book guides you through CBT exercises that you can do on your own on your own timetable. The exercises are though-provoking and sometimes actually difficult to do because you have dig down into your psyche, which can sometimes be really uncomfortable!! But the work is worth it. It may take you awhile to work through the book, but that's OK, because you really need to focus on the exercises and do some soul-searching for them to be really effective. I highly recommend this book for anyone that feels that their anxiety (whether diagnosed as GAD or not) has taken over their life. I'm not a doctor, so I can't say this can take the place of anti-anxiety medications, but I used it in conjunction with anti-anxiety meds and the combination has been really helpful.

An Effective & User-friendly Treatment,

This review is from: Mastery of Your Anxiety and Worry: Workbook (Treatments That Work) (Paperback)
As a cognitive-behavioral therapist, I have used this workbook with several patients and highly recommend it to anyone who suffers from generalized anxiety disorder. The techniques presented within it are effective for up to 70% of social anxiety suffers and I can personal it attest that they have proven highly effective for all of my patients who have used it. Although best used in the course of treatment with a cognitive-behavioral therapist, individuals can effectively employ the techniques presented on their own. Techniques presented include: Challenging Dysfunctional Thoughts (specifically overestimating the probability that bad things will happen and underestimating your ability to cope), Physiological Relaxation (including progressive muscle relaxation), and imagery exposure (facing fears / worry through visual imagery in order to break the cycle of verbal worry and avoidance). This treatment program does require work and persistence, but the can have tremendous payoffs if followed.

I bought this book a while back, some friend had recommended it. It seemed very different than other, more cookie-cutter types of books. Within a few weeks I saw some improvements. I gave my copy to a friend but this book is certainly one I would recommend to others, it made a good expression.
