Book Description

Giovanni Verga was an Italian realist writer, best known for his depictions of life in Sicily, and especially for the short story "Cavalleria Rusticana" and the novel "I Malavoglia".
"Mastro Don Gesualdo" is a masterpiece by Giovanni Verga. The novel focuses on the figure of Gesualdo Motta, a man who, during his life, sacrifices any affection for strictly economic reasons to find himself in the end, crushed and defeated by the drought which has been surrounded.
"Mastro Don Gesualdo" is set in Vizzini, Sicily, in the first half of the nineteenth century, during the Risorgimento.
The linguistic operation conducted by the writer in this novel is particularly complicated because of the heterogeneity of social classes represented, each one carrying its own vocabulary.
In the book, a biography of the author.

Editorial Reviews

Realistic novel of Sicilian life by Giovanni Verga, published in Italian in 1889. Mastro-don can be translated "Sir-Workman," a title that embodies the story's central dilemma. The protagonist, Gesualdo Motta, is a peasant who becomes a wealthy landowner through hard work and judicious business practices, but he cannot rise socially despite his marriage to the noble Bianca Trao. The decadence of the unbending Trao family is repeatedly contrasted with the honesty, strength, vitality, ingenuity, and ambition of Gesualdo. He is unable to understand why he becomes alienated from both the gentry and the peasantry; this lack of insight is the source of his tragedy. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature
