Matangi is easily the best album of the year. The level of thought that went into this album is beyond the mainstream's comprehension. Influences of /\/\/\Y/\ are here like on the title track (matangi), but like MIA's other albums, it's in a lane by itself. (Only 1 U, s/exodus, aTENTion, and bring the noize) have a unique and futuristic sound. Tracks like (come walk with me and warriors) have a very unconventional sound that will probably make critics uncomfortable. But, that tends to be my favorite part about MIA, when you think you have her figured out, you surprisingly don't. This just proves that she's an artist, NOT an entertainer. Influences of worldbeat and reggae are on here for the arular/kala fans. Tracks like (Y.A.L.A., bad girls, and double bubble trouble) prove that she has the instincts and capability to be a mainstream success but she chooses not to. Anything she plans on releasing after this will be highly anticipated. Favorite tracks; matangi, s/exodus, only 1 u, and y.a.l.a.

I approached this album with the only expectations that I would be listening to something original and quality. I am on the fifth listen-through and I have not been dissapointed. This album is excellent. Someone asked me what the album sounded like - and I did not have an answer other than "really good." It is hard to compare M.I.A.'s music to anything else out there because, I think, it is ahead of its time. I get the feeling that M.I.A. keeps progressing in her own direction which is a refreshing and welcome relief from mainstream pop/rap music. If you like M.I.A. I would encourage you not to compare this to her other albums, but just see this piece of work on its own - you will get more out of it. M.I.A. is my favorite artist and this album is another reason why.

Love M.I.A.--but until this one, 'Arular' was my favorite. I think now this one is, it's that great. Classic. Magnificent. I mean every song although you do have to play the first couple tracks as intro/setting, not unlike a great novel. It's not what you expect, even for this crazy brave bold rebel artist, you feel like you've walked into a Sri Lankan haunted house. Eeery. But then, from Cut 3, on...she has no peers, only pretenders. Only1U, Warriors, Come Walk with Me, Attention, Exodus, Bad Girls, Double Bubble Trouble, Y.A.L.A., Bring the Noize, Lights... Only the passage of time prevents these songs from being appreciated as the classics they are. Blows away every other CD this year. Yes, even pulled Eminem out of the car deck.

Do you ever read those spontaneous comments on YouTube? Kind of funny. One posted 'She's the female Tupac' and another responded, 'That makes no sense on any level.' But it does, you see, because of the highly skilled talent, boldness, and original nature of these artists, AND M.I.A. has no other nowadays female comparison point, no not anymore, they're dust at her feet. Nena Cherry? Who? Nicki Minaj? Please, she wishes. Madonna. Well, you know, once many years ago, Madonna listened to Kate Bush and made her best 'Ray of Light.' But Madonna could never be Kate Bush. M.I.A. CAN, if she wants, she's THAT good, that rhymically and melodically sound. She can be a rock star, she can be a hip-hop queen, she can be a dance club hero, she can be yes, a pop star. Another Youtube comment was about Elvis Costello w/ the Roots, both of whom I have purchased many many times in the past, and some guy compares it to the CLASH. HA ha, as Nelson Muntz would say.

I have been waiting for this album for a long time & I have to say it was worth the wait because really, Matangi is a revelation. (All the side eyes to that Pitchfork review/score.) Nothing I've heard this year sounds like this (and anything I could compare it to last year would be a reach as well); the beats are slick & the lyrics/ shots taken are on point (Boom Skit alone made my day.)

I think this album has a good balance, upbeat yet still managing to reflect the brash outspokenness that I love about M.I.A. Bad Girls still remains one of my life anthems & given how heavy this album has been on rotation for me, a lot of the tracks on here (Know It Ain't Right & Sexodus especially) are vying to displace some quality favs on my most played list .

This is definitely an album I recommend for M.I.A. fans.

First listen through, I couldn't stop laughing. This record is just silly good. Like shut up, listen, and learn something kind of good. M.I.A. blows through like a monsoon with this one.

I was so excited for this album it felt like Christmas time. And as always M.I.A did not disappoint. I cannot understand why she isn't bigger than Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Katy Perry, and all the other big females right now. M.I.A should go down in history as the greatest female rap artist period! She has never made a bad album in my eyes. My favorite tracks on this album are 'yala', 'know it ain't right', 'sexodus/exodus', 'double bubble trouble', 'warrior', and 'matangi'. I don't care for 'lights' but I let the album play through and enjoy it the whole time. Because her worst song is still better than most of the crap out here. Yes I have been a huge fan of hers since 'arular' but this is not a biased review because good music is good music period and M.I.A makes good music.
