Written in the early 1925's,this is the best work of William Tatem Tilden-The best tennis player of all times-as a tennis author. It provide the first insight of how technology of shot making affects the dynamics of the match itself. As the title implies that through match practice, perfection;which is never attainable, can be reach. The author presents future stars of the sport and give his personal perception about them. Remember that this work was written in the euphoria of the twenties by a well manered author that knew his trade of his profession-tennis!

It confounds me why there has never been a movie made about this man. His story has all the parts of a great drama. A great athlete. A man of the world. An respected author. And a man who finally fell because of his background. A tragedy. What a man. What a story. And what a movie it would be.

The Bible of Tennis. That says it. This did not come from Moses, but from the greatest tennis player and tennis advocate of his time, William T. Tilden. The introduction understates the influence of this multi-threat (singles, doubles, mixed-doubles)completest of tennis champions. He was the first journalist/tennis player and 'celebrity.' The title summarizes Tilden's emphasis in tennis play: nothing successful will follow if you don't watch the ball! How true! Then the importance of grips, footwork, conditioning, etc. follows. You will learn how defense and attack work together to defeat opponents. From this he expands to The All-Court Game and Pace and Speed. It all becomes simple and clear when it is done by a master-strategist such as Tilden. With simplicity and clarity Tilden makes his point about the tennis essentials in 13 chapters, at least 10 chapters of importance like the Ten Commandments. You will improve your game and your analytical skills (superior to the talking TV-heads today)from this insightful tennis mind, Bill Tlden.

My dad would go on forever about Match Play and the Spin of the Ball. "Have you read it yet?" "What chapter are you on?" - touting it as a right of passage in terms of my tennis development. Wish I knew then what I know now. Without question, the best tennis book I have ever read. Still relevant decades later and like a breath of fresh air even now. Consumed this on my way to the West Coast for a national indoor title with my brother. I found myself laughing out load and rereading many sections, due in large part to the sheer genius of Bill Tilden. I have not taken a second spin thru the book in its entirety, but I believe every serious tennis player should have a copy somewhere close to the bedside table. Plan to give several out this Holiday to close friends, who will no doubt benefit from the sage wisdom Tilden imparts. Absolute "must have".

If your a serious tennis player do yourself a favor and buy or read this book.Almost everything in this book can be used by todays tennis player. Most useful is Tilden's view of what makes a tennis player tick and how to become a much better competitor. Tilden truely understands the game of tennis from the mechanics to the mental aspects of the game.
