Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Match Prints is a visual and editorial dialogue between two important photographers and longtime friends. Over the course of their twenty-year friendship, Jim Marshall and Timothy White discovered that their work often shared striking similarities despite time differences of as much as three decades. Sometimes the similarity presented itself in the form of a common pose or expression, a common prop or situation. Sometimes the photographers' subject was the same, the images taken decades apart.

Marshall and White have collaborated in selecting more than fifty stunning pairings for publication for the first time in Match Prints. An introduction by renowned music writer Anthony DeCurtis compares the work of the two photographers and provides firsthand behind-the-scenes anecdotes—an entertaining, informative read that sheds light on the photographers' approach to their work and captures the essence of their enduring friendship. Also included throughout the book are first-person anecdotes from the subjects themselves on the images and their creation.

Whether poignant, dramatic, hilarious, or shocking, these are powerful visual pairings by two masters of photography.

Two well-known photographers, Jim Marshall and Timothy White, combine their talents in this collection of celebrity portraits both took over the years. When comparing shots, they discovered similarly-themed pix showing the same personality, sometimes in almost the same pose, etc. They collected the best such images - 50+ paired shots - for this interesting volume published in 2010 by HarperCollins.

Marshall and White are a study in contrasts. Marshall is a rock photographer; White concentrates on celebrities. Marshall's work is almost exclusively b&w candids; White's, posed shots done in color.

Despite those differences, the underlying concept - Matched Prints - is fairly well-sustained throughout the book. There are many "two-fers" shots of the same person (Ray Charles, Woody Allen, Aretha Franklin, Liza Minelli, etc.) along with similarly-themed snaps (Johnny Cash giving the photog the finger/Liz Taylor doing the same thing; Outkast in the back seat of a limo/Loggins & Messina, ditto; Paul & Linda McCartney hugging/Johnny & June Cash hugging; etc.).

However, not all the shots support the concept as well as the above pix. The pairings of Robert Plant/Nicole Kidman; Sinatra & Dino/Clooney, Damon and Pitt; etc. are marginal at best.

In any case, if you love looking at photos of famous people, check out MATCH PRINTS. It comes with a $40.00 price tag but celeb-watchers and photography buffs should find it of interest. Recommended.

I bought this as a father's day gift for my husband. He mentioned he wanted it when he saw a story about the book on Sunday Morning CBS. When he opened it and starting telling the guests at the event about the story, most of them sat around looking at the book, taking time to enjoy the great shots of legendary people. That pretty much tells you how terrific the book is.

I purchased this book to place on my coffee table in the living room. It has received several comments from my friends on what an interesting book this is. It offers a comparison between two photographers and their similarities over the years. Anyone who is a music/celeb enthustiast, I would recommend this book.
