Great questions,
This review is from: Match Wits With Mensa: The Complete Quiz Book (Mensa Genius Quiz) (Paperback)
I brought this Mensa book with me when my family went sailing, and it was a big hit with all. It is great even for children, if they have adults helping them along with the questions. Being a kid myself, I found the a-b-c quizzes hte easiest and most fun, because it wasn't pure over-stuffed-brain-knowledge and way-above-my-head common sense. Even with those questions, though, I found the book very enjoyable and would recommend it to any and all people who are looking for a good challenge.

A brief comment,

This book by well known and long-time Mensa member Marvin Grosswirth complements the several books that Dr. Abby Salny has put out. There's enough variety in the types of questions to keep just about anybody entertained, although a few of the questions I'm not used to seeing on the older, more traditional IQ tests. Supposedly almost a quarter of a million people have bought the various Mensa Quiz books, which is interesting, because Mensa's membership (I being one) has been gradually declining for a couple of decades. Overall a good book of puzzles, brain teasers and IQ questions to keep those mental muscles in tune, which is important--one of the most important things brain scientists have learned over the last several decades is that the brain is very much like a muscle--either you use it or lose it.

The ONLY Mensa Quiz book worth having,

This review is from: Match Wits With Mensa: The Complete Quiz Book (Mensa Genius Quiz) (Paperback)
I can honestly say that I have never seen a Mensa book that so accurately reflected the challenges of being truly intellegent as this quiz book. I'm sorry that some of the other reviewers found the questions trival or inconsequential. However, I've found the book to be a lot of fun, and my husband-- a radio personality-- uses questions from it on the air constantly with great response.I think it's a winner!

Lots of teasers,

This book has a lot of brain teasers and a few trivia questions. Though, if you are a trivia buff, you are bound to be disappointed. You'd be much better off buying a book like "Quizzing" which I found had some amazing trivia questions.

if it was not for one gem...,

ok, i went through the whole book...i never really tested my iq...this was a total let-down...most of the questions are just childish forms of trick questions (how far does a dog run into the woods? halfway. from there the dog is running out of the woods...whaaaaaaat?).there is one gem and if you can't get this one, maybe you should buy the book: a horse merchant goes to a fair to sell his horses. he sells half of his horses to his first client and adds half a horse as a bonus. then he sells half of the horses he has left to the second client and, you got it, adds another half a horse for good measure. to the last client, he sells half of the horses he has left and then adds half a horse. all clients got full horses (nobody had to drag half a carcass away). how many horses did the horse merchant sell that day? my god, it seems soooooo simple now but it did take me ten whole minutes to get this one. but honestly, this is probably the only gem in this book so unless if you are totally bored and like asking trick questions to little kids...buy yourself a good meal instead!

THE ANSWER IS 7,

The orginal question that was posted should have indicated that there were no horses left at the end of the day. Without that qualifier, there can be no definitive answer.
If the Merchant has 7 horses when he sees his FIRST customer, then sells half (3.5) and adds half a horse (0.5), then he has sold to the first customer 4 horses, leaving him with 3 horses. Then, the Merchant goes to his SECOND customer, and sells half his horses (1.5) and adds half a horse (0.5) then he has sold to the SECOND customer 2 horses, leaving him with 1 horse. Finally, the Merchant goes to his THIRD and FINAL customer, and sells half of his horses (0.5) and adds a half a horse (0.5), so that the Merchant has sold to the THIRD and FINAL customer 1 horse, leaving the Merchant with ZERO horses. Three transactions, selling half his total plus 0.5, ending the series in zero. The total number of horses is 7.

I don't get the whole MENSA sponsored puzzle book thing. These books, and particularly this one, are just plain bad. Doesn't MENSA have any better puzzle writers than the ones currently writing? Isn't Terry Stickels a member of MENSA? Now his puzzle books have something to offer. Anyway, MENSA, you can do better.
