1.0 out of 5 stars Fustration Free Packaging/Present a Goner!
The fustration free packaging was the easiest I have ever opened in a child's gift. Great idea! Unfortunately, the present hardly outlasted the packaging. My exuberant nephew made short work of his new Christmas gift and by New Year's Day, it was a goner! Great packaging though!

This review is from: Matchbox Mega Rig Pirates Ship (Toy)
I bought this for my son for this fourth birthday and he plays with it a few times a week, though it mostly gets play time in the bath since the boat and the various smaller parts float. He enjoys the pirate ship but it does not get nearly the attention and devotion as his Mega Rig Space Shuttle. The sections that can be pulled apart from the ship only form other smaller boats versus combining to make a totally different type of vehicle, so one ends up with a flotilla of small boats along with the black shell of the pirate boat. Not as interesting to play with as anticipated.

My 4 year old boy loved this boat. He takes it apart and puts it back together over and over. He enjoys stacking the sails. He likes that it rolls and he can push it on the tile.

4.0 out of 5 stars great for bathtime, November 25, 2009
= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
My 3.5 yr old picked this out. I wouldn't have chosen it but he was really infatuated in the store so we brought it home, and he still plays with it daily. It gets a lot of attention - in and out of the tub. I was surprised. There is a real lack of bath time toys, so what a bonus.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Frustration-Free Packaging for Gift Giving- Silly Pirates!, December 18, 2009

Saw some reviews of one star on this toy becuase they didn't think FFP is for gift giving? Kids aren't as impressed by flashy packaging as they are with open and play- right now!! There aren't fifty ties and plastic bubbles that cut your fingers- no hassle, no mess, and better for the environment. Plus- the brown box adds to the mystery for the younger ones. My God son lit up when that brown box was opened and.... he could play with it right away instead of waiting for 4 adults to huddle around twisty ties for thirty minutes- using skills only expert shoplifters must possess to get the silly thing out of the packaging. Thumbs up for Frustration Free Packaging!!

Also- love the MATCHBOX series with modular hookups. I'm pretty sure we'll see a Pirate Space Ship once they figure out the sets could go together. Yay for creativity!

5.0 out of 5 stars So much fun and versitile too!, November 9, 2009
= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
My son got this for his 4th birthday. As soon as it was out of the package, he started playing and hasn't really stopped since. It is great for in the tub and out too. The octopus's tenticles come off, which is tons of fun for him. His does have some problems getting the pieces snapped back together, but I think with practice it will get easier. Definately recommend this. He also got another Matchbox little pirate set with the shark. I recommend the two together-makes for a lot of imaginative play.

This thing is huge. I wasn't expecting something so big, so it was a nice surprise. As always, Amazon had it here in one business day with no hassles.

4.0 out of 5 stars Floatable fun for kids, December 15, 2009

First, about the frustration free packaging - It certainly lacks the presentation appeal of the usual cellophane window box. But for parents it's a whole lot easier to remove from the package without all those plasic coated wires and straps holding the toy in place.
That said, this toy is much cooler looking than the average toy pirate ship. It comes with two small pirate action figures. But there is room enough for a dozen more plastic buccaneers of the same 2 inch size. The only drawback about this sort of toy is that the modular assembly isn't as versatile for an old time sailing as it is for modern vehicles such as space shuttles. It is difficult to create new ships by re-assembling the individual parts. But all the pieces float by themselves so a child could break this big ship into several smaller ones. This makes for a nice naval battle in the pool or bathtub.

5.0 out of 5 stars The big hit of Christmas!!!, May 13, 2010

This wasn't intended to be the big gift for Christmas, I had spent quite a bit of money on a train table and was expecting that to be my son's favorite. I was totally wrong! I even bought this toy as an afterthought, it was only $7.99 a few days before Christmas and so I just went ahead and bought it. Almost 6 months later my 3 year old still plays with EVERY DAY! It's nice that it can go in the water, and it floats and little hands can assemble it easily. It has small wheels on the bottom so it "sails" on the carpet nicely, and it doesn't have too many small parts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impatiently waiting for my son to tire of this one...... ;), March 4, 2010

I know the important thing is that my 5-going-on-6 year old loves this Pirate Ship. But I am so sick of playing Pirate that I can't wait for him to move on to something else! <said MOSTLY joking>

I am actually thrilled that he loves this toy so much, as is the relative that bought it for him months ago (and paid, gasp, full price!!), and I have to say that I was against getting it because I thought he'd play with it a few times and then set it aside. Instead, he wants to play with it several times a week, re-enacting Pirate battles and Octopus takeovers, both in and out of the tub. While he does play with it on his own some, he enjoys it a lot more with someone else to play Good Pirate while he plays Bad Pirate.

It is really durable, goes in and out of the tub with ease, and has so many configurations it really does keep your imagination going.

5.0 out of 5 stars A quick warning about Frustration Free packaging!, December 20, 2009

The toy's fine but Frustration Free means that it shows up in a brown cardboard box with no outside illustration at all. (Excepting the large "Mattel" logo on the outside.) If you're going to take it out and set it up you'll be fine but if you're expecting something they will get excited about as soon as they rip off the wrapping paper you may want the regular retail package.

I prefer the frustration free since that way I got to try it out in the bathtub first. The octopus is cool!
