Vintage second tier Coyne,

This review is from: Matching Head & Feet (Audio CD)
This review is for the original, rather than expanded, version. At that, this is solid, vintage second tier Coyne from the Virgin days, and among his few stabs at making more commercial music. Of course, that assumes that any album leading off with the wonderful, fractured "Savior" and containing the venomous and disturbing "Turpentine" can be considered a stab at commercialism. But while the horns, keyboards and more complex arrangements lend a certain depth and charm to the proceedings, ultimately the sheen weakens the overall record and a couple of the tunes are downright ordinary - something you can very very rarely say about Coyne. The strengths ultimately win out and this is a required purchase for the committed, but the uninitiated are better served to start with Marjorie Razorblade, Blame it on the Night, Bursting Bubbles or a newer work like Sugar Candy Taxi.
