Matchless is a funny, honest memoir of a 50-something woman facing a challenging time in her life: divorce followed by re-entering the "dating world". Technology has changed everything, and dating is no exception, with online services becoming the most common (but not necessarily preferred) method of meeting others. Anne Coleman uses humor, clever pseudonyms, and anecdotes to make this a tale for all to read. She makes no attempt to hide the warts; in this case, the warts are mostly men. Her honest reflections on her marriage and her family are a pleasure, precisely because they are honest.

While she clearly wrote this book for women, she has (perhaps accidentally) created a marvelous teaching tool for men. Yes, fellow guys, we can learn something from her stops and starts in relationship-building. No, I don't mean that we can learn how to write a better online profile. Rather, while enjoying the humor, we can learn something about ourselves and about the "fair sex". And we can also admit, as the author shows, that we know very little about women, and even less about relationships.

There are regrets without self-pity, reminding us that we all have regrets, so why not use those experiences to learn, grow, laugh, and love?

Women may read this book to commiserate, or to laugh, but I urge men to read this book for instruction, or at least for reflection. You won't regret it, and maybe the women in your life will thank you for it.

I loved it! Painful at times, but rings so true on what it is really like dating in the on line age. Being over 50 myself I can see some of the dates I've had, and laughed. I hear about so many others meeting the man of their dreams through on line dating, but I wonder where they are? Funny, sad and true. loved this author

While I have not experienced the "thrill" of online dating post-divorce, I can and did relate to the very human experience Anne Coleman has shared in this very cleverly written, wise memoir. She's brave. She knows what she wants, and she goes for it. Coleman puts her story out there and draws us in to share in her disappointments through her warmth, candor and--ultimately--her laughter. Her well crafted book is a good read, and it will be a good friend to the lonely person struggling to reinvent herself, or himself, at a certain age.

Anne Coleman offers us a frank, witty, and thoughtful view on love, loneliness, and the importance of being able to laugh at ourselves in Matchless. A brave, insightful view of her journey and a personal reflection that all women (and men) can relate to. At times painful and hysterical, you will live alongside her as she shares her difficult divorce and the inevitable shock and disbelief at the online dating scene after having a companion all those years. I empathized with every word - having divorced and started dating again after being wed with children. It is a fun read too -- peppered with drink recipes and diva recommendations for how to pick yourself up and move on with the help of your best friends, your own courage, and the resolve we all find from within. Even my 18-year old daughter read and loved the book!

This book, while a sad account of an intelligent woman's search for serious companionship, gives many moments of humor and several good warnings to the prospective on-line companion-searcher. The book in fact serves as a much better window into the author's nature than any profile she may have had on line. Too bad she isn't still active and just lists this book as her profile.

The take-home lesson is that one's intuition and first impressions are usually accurate and one should make decisions as if they always are. Like, for instance, walk quickly away at the first sign of weirdness. The book also gave an unsettling view of the large proportion of males on line that are unsuitable for an intelligent and sophisticated woman. The distressing experiences the author relates are funny and sad, but not unlike those that this reviewer experienced in the reverse gender situation.

This is really a must-read for anyone (male or female) considering, or even in the throes of, on-line match searching.

I picked up this book because I was trying to get myself motivated to going back online again. I am the same age as the author was when she tried online dating. I truly related to the book - laughed and thought, "Yup - looks like it doesn't matter what state you are in - the story is the same". The transition that she went through is very similar to what I am going through now - the realization that - I deserve better than what's out there online - we all do. I've been debating to go out there again since May - it's now mid-September and I just don't have the stomach for it. So - what the book did for me was to confirm that I needed to stay off the dating sites. I'm much happier not getting on that merry go round!

I love this book!! Anne has such a great way of sharing her experience with marriage and mid life dating. The drink recipes and lessons learned are a special touch. I related to Anne with some similar stories as I have been "online" a few times during my 12 years of being single. While I have been in serious relationships during this time, I have also been immersed in the online dating frienzy. Anne is a wonderful writer - down to earth, honest, and funny. She points out the weaknesses that we all have and especially how weird men can be. Yes, it's true. :)

What a wonderfully honest, sensitive and witty exploration of the world of online dating! The angst of facing this new dating environment at mid-life comes across loud and clear. Old social rules no longer exist, the competition is younger, and honesty is hard to come by. Yet, this is how it's done today. Anne Coleman takes us on a romp through her experiences from her first naive and hopeful attempts to understanding and coming to grips with the reality of online dating, laughing all the way.
