Editorial Reviews

Darla is proud to offer the fifth new record from Aarktica, the pop/rock/experimental group lead by New York’s Jon DeRosa featuring Mascott’s Kendall Meade and Drum Corps’ Aaron Spectre as well as other musicians known for their own work. As with previous records Matchless Years was recorded by Charles Newman at Mother West Studio, NYC. On Matchless Years Aarktica embraces the spirit of the best works of brethren Jesus And Mary Chain, Spiritualized, and Magnetic Fields, as well as a progression toward "dark disco" and a meshing of 1950's vocal pop sensibilities atop Aarktica's established atmospheric sound. The tradition of moody pop aural heroin has never sounded so comfortable. Matchless Years is by far Aarktica’s strongest and most accessible work to date and is sure to gain them new fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Aarktica at their lyrical best, July 18, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Matchless Years (Audio CD)
Having entered the Aarktica scene late, I purchased their discography out of release order, with this being the last I received. I initially heard "In Sea" In Sea and was hooked by their all-encompassing swirl of sound, dreamy sound-track-like instrumentals, and soothing sound clips that seemed to echo around in my head. When this CD arrived I was somewhat shocked by the fact that there were lyrics on almost every track (Previous discs had one or two at the most). Upon a second listen I found these did nothing to diminish the musical experience. In truth, Matchless Years has become one of my favorite Aarktica CD's. The lyrics are awash in the sound. A listener can choose to pay attention (lyrics included) or just flow along and enjoy the mood. That's not to say that this is as ambient as the band's "No Solace In Sleep" CD but Aarktica has made each of their albums similar yet different enough to not become boring or repetitive. Their music experiments have ranged from pure ambient-scapes, to mind-tripping cinematic sounds, to this release, which is almost space-folk. I highly recommend this for fans of Aarktica's other discs, or for listeners of male singers in mellow bands i.e. Blood Memory Valley of the Sun, Soul Whirling Somewhere Eating the Sea, or John Foxx Glimmer: Best of John Foxx. Also for those new to the Aarktica sound who are interested in groups like: Explosions in the Sky Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place, Bitcrush Epilogue in Waves, Nudge As Good As Gone, Glider One Day at a Time, or Hammock Kenotic... this will be pure enjoyment!
