Book Description

A touching new novel from bestselling author Elin Hilderbrand in which a woman sets out to find love for those closest to her - before it's too late.

48-year-old Nantucketer Dabney Kimball Beech has always had a gift for matchmaking. Some call her ability mystical, while others - like her husband, celebrated economist John Boxmiller Beech, and her daughter, Agnes, who is clearly engaged to the wrong man - call it meddlesome, but there's no arguing with her results: With 42 happy couples to her credit and all of them still together, Dabney has never been wrong about romance.

Never, that is, except in the case of herself and Clendenin Hughes, the green-eyed boy who took her heart with him long ago when he left the island to pursue his dream of becoming a journalist. Now, after spending 27 years on the other side of the world, Clen is back on Nantucket, and Dabney has never felt so confused, or so alive.

But when tragedy threatens her own second chance, Dabney must face the choices she's made and share painful secrets with her family. Determined to make use of her gift before it's too late, she sets out to find perfect matches for those she loves most. The Matchmaker is a heartbreaking story about losing and finding love, even as you're running out of time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another home run for Hilderbrand April 30, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Forty-eight-year-old amateur matchmaker Dabney has a lot on her plate. The love of her life, and father of her child, who she hadn't seen in twenty-seven years I'd coming back to Nantucket, her adult daughter is in a controlling relationship, and she hasn't been feeling well. From the blurb, we know that Dabney will try to find mates for those around her whole she still can.
Elin Hilderbrand, you have your readers this wonderful free gift--the first five chapters of your upcoming novel. Like a sip of water in the desert when the oasis is two months away or a bite of chocolate and I can't have another for two months. I love that you write such compelling characters, and plots that make me feel as if I'm on Nantucket, interacting with the characters. I hate that the first chapters of THE MATCHMAKER are so delicious I've fallen in love with characters I won't see again for months when I want to stay up all night and finish the entire book tonight.
I hate that you've enticed me and please do the same thing for your next book.

Elin Hilderbrand continues the light, predictable stories. This one is moderately enjoyable for summer reading, but one should take it from the library, not purchase it. Even more preposterous than earlier books.

Only getting to read the first 5 chapters and then not having the rest be available until 2015... is a bad publishing idea... I will have forgotten the content by then... bummer...

3.0 out of 5 stars Chewing on her pearls...but, I'm not July 29, 2014

I enjoyed the preview of The First 5 Chapters....the storyline appeared to be more creative than past Elin Hiderbrand novels have been. Frankly, I am a little tired of her novels, and had not planned to purchase this latest one...until the FREE preview was offered. My thought as I was reading the preview.... she is progressing in her story-telling and writing skills....however, after purchasing the E-book so that I could continue, have been disappointed that the storyline has lapsed back into the same old, same old. And Dabney is positively hokey...auras, indeed!
Does anything ever happen on Nantucket in the Winter time? What do the year round residents do when there are no summer people flying in and out for the week-end or summer vacation?
Having said this, I read an Elin Hilderbrand novel every Summer and am hoping that Ms. Hilderbrand will develop her characters and story to encompass different seasons....hoping to want to continue reading about Nantucket.

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing really good read buy now July 22, 2014

Sometimes, most times a good beach read is a cure for all that ails you. This book is packed with character development, flash backs (that aren't confusing), different perspectives and stirs up the emotions. Of course i had to get the novel and it was well worth it. I looked forward to reading it and find out more about Box, Clen and the rest of Nantucket. If you are looking for a thought provoking, easy summer read this is it. I laughed, I cried, and wanted more. It's like a lost a friend now that the book is over --very good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great Elin Hilderbrand book May 15, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Can't wait for the book to be available! I have read all of her books and have recommended them to many of my friends, most of us are seniors and enjoy books that are not too heavy or depressing. I remember that my mother had spent time on Nantucket as a child (she lived in Boston), and my husband and I have visited the island with fond memories. Her books make me feel like we are still there!!
