Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9-This third installment in the hip series spotlights Nesta, an extraordinarily beautiful and high-spirited 14-year-old whose family is undergoing relatively hard financial times. Falling for ultra-wealthy Simon, she thinks she needs to pretend to be someone she's not in order to keep him. When her pretenses catch up to her, and she is at the risk of losing him and her best friends Lucy and Izzie, she must tell the truth. In the end, the teen learns that it's best to be yourself. This is a quick and fun read, and even reluctant readers will enjoy following the exploits of Nesta and her North London friends.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not as good as the first two, August 13, 2003

Okay, so we've heard Lucy's story and Izzie's story. Now it's Nesta's turn.

When Nesta is stuck on a three-hour train ride, she meets Simon, and they connect instantly. Simon invites Nesta to go horseback riding, skiing, and the movies, etc. But, on every "date" they go on, his sister Tanya and her friend Cressida tag along. Cressida has a BIG problem with Nesta, and is just downright mean to her. Meanwhile, Izzie's singing with a band, and Lucy's back with her old boyfriend Tony.

This book is funny, but not as good as the first two. And it really bothers me how Nesta talks - she always says how she's so pretty, and when you're pretty like she is boys always flock around you, etc. she sounds just like one of the stuck up girls that she complains about.

Overall grade - B

A Kid's Review
Mates, Dates, and Designer Divas is about many things. To start, Nesta falls in love with Simon. Then his sister's friend Cressida acts snobby toward her. After that she soon finds out she can't spend money on riding gear for horseback riding with Simon. Simon is rich and wealthy and Nesta was rich and soon found out she might loose everything. Read the book to find out why.
This book is a very good book. Some good things about Nesta could be she is nice, she has good friends, and she doesn't let people bring her down. Some bad thoughts about her could be that she can be selfish, she always gets what she wants, and if she doesn't she whines. The lesson of the story would be don't let people bring you down. I found this out when Izzie and Lucy were talking with her about Simon. All in all, I think Mates, Dates, and Designer Divas is a very good book and if you like chick flicks; you should read it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Eh., January 6, 2006
If you like girly, estrogen-filled books. This is the one for you. Mates, Dates and Designer Divas is the first book of the Mates, Dates series that I've read. It was about Nesta, who is a ego centric drama queen, who has to cut back on money because both of her parents are temporarily unemployed. Nesta meets a boy and they become boyfriend and girlfriend. The rest of the book is basically about Nesta dealing with peer pressure, a little bit of gambling (sorry. spoiler there), and her new boyfriend's peers.
