5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!
Lucy is 14, yet looks like a 12-year-old. Boy that is. She's flat chested, short, and she just doesn't have the looks that she wants. Her two best friends, Nesta and Izzie, are the complete opposite of her. They are both 14, yet looks 16. Lucy decides, after falling in love with a guy at first sight, that she's going to change. She needs a makeover. Only she didn't...

2.0 out of 5 stars It was alright
This book was cute, i suppose. It made for light reading (I read it all on a 6 hour plane ride), but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it. The author seemed out of touch. She just threw in what she had seen about teenagers from her Businessweek. There were Leonardo DiCaprio and Spice Girl comments, like that's all teens know and love. It was cute, but I dont plan on...

This is a hilarious books, with 3 characters that readers will be able to relate to instantly. Fans of Jacqueline Wilson's "Girls Trilogy" will relish in the likeness between the 2 series, and the similarities between the 3 characters. The supermodel-type, Alanis Morisette-type, and the left-out-type. This is a must read for everyone. Especially girls who LOVED "Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging", and the "Girls trilogy." I give this series 2 thumbs up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Make a "Date" with this Book: Light and Sweet; just right!, June 14, 2003

"liaden" (Somewhere Over the Rainbow) - See all my reviews
Okay, my initial reaction to the title of this book was that it was a total rip-off of Louise Rennison's novels, and I was determined to read it, and then leave a scathingly honest review about it right here, revealing it to be a scam.

Alas, you can see that this is not how it ended up. See, despite the main character resembling Rennison's Georgia (both are joke-prone English 14 year olds) she is completely unique and with different goals that her counterpart. I ended up enjoying every last word of this delicious novel.

Lucy Loverling's life is coming undone. Suddenly, everyone is telling her to make descisions about her life she doesn't even want to think about yet. It seems like everyone else she knows, knows exactly what they want to do with their lives. Her best friend Izzie is apparently being stolen away from her by beautiful and poised Nesta, and she has to deal with her crazy and slightly poor family. Not to mention the gorgeous boy she falls for at first sight--who turns out to be Nesta's brother!

A cute story about finding your identity and finding your friends. A happily ever after with fun characters who are well-rounded and geared for sequels to come. 4 stars because it was sweet and fun and meaningful, but it lost the fifth to unoriginallity. I can't wait to read the sequel!

Have fun reading this feel-good novel and look out for future novels to come! Happy Reading!

I loved this book! It was very funny and good to read when you just want to escape from the real world. This book is about a young girl who is in love with her friends older brother and even though her friend says that he has hurt alot of girls and broken alot of hearts she still doesnt stop hopeing that they will end up together. I loved this book even though it was kinda sort and i read it in about 2 hours! Overall a good read for teens.

5.0 out of 5 stars This series is da bomb, February 26, 2006
From the moment i read this book, i fell in love with it. The characters are people i can actually relate to, and they're not stuck-up snobs. The plots are easy, but something that you can also relate to besides the characters. The whole book has a feeling of reality about it. If you love this first istallment of Mate Dates...then you'll love the rest.

5.0 out of 5 stars really good series!!, June 13, 2005
This is the first book in a series about 4 girls, Lucy, Izzie, Nesta and T.J. This book is about Lucy. She sees a boy one day and is in love at first sight, and she tells Izzie and Nesta about him and Izzie goes with her every day to the place where she saw him, to meet him. Once Lucy finds out who he is, she is afraid to tell her friends that he is the boy she was talking about. I wont tell why this is cuz it will spoil the surprise. Meanwhile, Lucy thinks she has no talents and doesnt know what she wants to be when she grows up when everyone else does and to top it all off, she thinks she looks 12 when she is really 14 and she is "as flat as a 9 year old boy". When she tries to change things around with a hair cut and it is worse than before, she gets really upset and sad. Will things start getting better? To find out, read this book cuz it is definately really good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Light, fun, and easy to read, May 26, 2003

"Mates, Dates, and Inflatible Bras" is the first book in the series that follows three friends Izzie, Nesta, and Lucy. This book mainly focuses on Lucy. She's pretty insecure, especially since her best friend in the entire world (Izzie) seems to have a new best friend (Nesta), she has no idea what she wants to do in her future, and she's really short (4 foot eight, I think) and everyone calls her a midget. One day, when Lucy's eccentric health-food store owner dad is driving her to Izzie's house, Lucy spots HIM. Lucy is stricken by this "mystery guy" and soon her and Izzie are on lookout for him, they even hang out by his school.

Lucy finds out who the "mystery guy" is - and she can't believe it! She's totally shocked...and embarassed too.

At the end of the book, Lucy discovers what she wants to do in her future (though it's pretty obvious), talks to the mystery guy, and also comes to terms with Izzie's new friendship with Nesta.

Mates, Dates, and Inflatible Bras is a really good book, and very easy to read. I finished it really quickly, but I plan on getting the next two books in the series. If you liked Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging, you'll love these books too! I highly reccommend this book!

Overall Grade - A+

5.0 out of 5 stars Similarities, yes..., April 19, 2004
I've read the first 3 and a half of the Mates, Dates series and Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging as of today. I've been reading these reviews and seeing that a few people dislike Mates, Dates and consider them copies of the other series. Honestly, they are both witty, true to life and they go together great. Of course they have similarities: they all take place in London and concern the lives of teenage girls. However, I think they both bring in different aspects of friendship. Concerning the Mates, Dates since this is that review ;), the circle of friends is really developed throughout the course of the books. I also like how these books define the girls' character individually, giving them all different characteristics and likes/dislikes. The switching of narrators gives a different POV and insight to the goings-on. All in all, I find Mates, Dates to be thoroughly enjoyable and I think they are more than capable of standing on their own. I would definitely recommend that both series be read for the full effect, but for the faster read, go to Mates, Dates. They're quick, light-hearted, and as the cover says, "Great escapist reading."

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome book!!, June 10, 2003
This is a really great book that i suggest you read if you are looking for something thats easy to read, but also really interesting and funny. I would suggest though, that you read at least one or some of the Georgia Nicolson books (Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging; and others) because if you are from the US like me, i never would have understood any of the terms in this book w/o the handy glossary in the others.
