I have long worried about the time when I wouldn't be able to help my son with his homework. When would he bypass my skills -- especially in the kinds of math that I just haven't had to use in a long while.

Thankfully, Laura Laing has written a great refresher course in Math For Grownups. It's wise, witty, and most importantly, will get me through my son's next few math classes.

Thank you Laura! I'm in your debt.

Math for Grownups is a great book! Laura Laing does a wonderful job of explaining several math concepts in simple terms and in a friendly tone. The many real-life examples she provides with step-by-step solutions are excellent. This refresher course was helpful and I plan to refer to specific chapters in the future as problem-solving situations come up. Math for Grownups is a worthwhile investment of time and money. Highly recommend.

I love to stock our bookshelves with books that bring out the fun side of math so my children grow up with a better attitude about the subject than I did. The good news is that it's working! They really do read the books about math that I have collected and I know this one will be a great reference for all of us. It's all about the type of math I'm good at - the practical stuff! I can figure out a sale discount, estimate budget amounts in my head, and plan how much time it will take us to drive downtown without any problem. I just got lost when they started throwing in x and y and made me memorize theorems. I've been brushing up on my skills with this book and also having some fun.

This was a fun book to read! Math can be challenging, and this book made it easier. The book is full of useful tips and funny stories. Most of these books would bore me to tears. I'll actually read this one again, and use it for shopping, car buying, travel and much more.
Definitely worth the money.

The idea behind "Math for Grownups" by Laura Laing is a good one, but the execution is poor.

There are no figures in the book and yet the author is writing about everyday math.
For example, she helps the reader construct a flower bed without any visual help.

Secondly, there are at least three major errors in the book.
For example, on page 116, the author says, "If you divide 23 by 12,
you'll end up with 2 1/12 cups", but 2 1/12 should be 1 11/12.
On page 204, the formula for converting Celsius to Fahrenheit should be
9C/5 + 32, not 9/5(C+32).

As a former mathophobe, I found Laura Laing's book to be extremely helpful, engaging and fun to read. I find it odd that some people are writing a review of Ms. Laing's book based on an error made by a USA TODAY reporter. Perhaps you should actually READ the book before deciding how you feel about it!
I have already loaned my copy out to two people, who also found it very worthwhile.
Now I can help my child with his homework with total confidence!
Well done, Ms. Laing!

I met the author at a conference several years ago, and was excited to see that she'd written a book with such an interesting premise. As someone who gravitated more towards humanities than math and science in school, I figured I could use a brush-up and Math for Grownups delivered plenty of practical, real-world examples to illustrate mathematical concepts and formulas. It's also told with a fun, conversational style. Maybe if I'd had Ms. Laing as my math teacher, I would have enjoyed algebra or geometry as much as I liked English class.

I didn't think it could be possible...to read a book about MATH and be truly entertained. Laura Laing has a way with explaining complicated mathematical situations (making them easy to understand), and keeping the reader engaged. A good read.
