As a new nursing student I have found this book very useful. There is a very comprehensive introduction which allows the student to relearn some of the math skills that may have been lost over the year. I also really like the fact that the book comes with a removable laminated card with conversions on it. I'm sure that this will come in quite handy when I begin my clinicals.
My only real complaint is that I have found a couple of mistakes in the fifth edition. I found at least two mistake in the answers provided for the chapter review on apothecaries' measurements. I would recommend that the publisher check their material a little better so as to prevent confusion for students.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good refresher., January 6, 2012
I bought this book before I began nursing school and have found it to be fairly helpful. My major criticism is how it seems to "blow through" the more complicated topics, showing you in painstaking detail how to solve an almost remedial problem then using advanced problems during the chapter reviews without showing the necessary steps. There was also no "pull out card" included. I wonder if that is a publisher's error, as the conversion charts promised on the pull out card are printed inside the front and back covers. The book also seems to arbitrarily round decimals up or down. For example, one answer of 14.5 was rounded down to just 14. An answer of 13.3 was rounded up to 14, without explanation.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good book, but *many* errors, March 30, 2011
By
I borrowed the 5th ed. from the library. (Current ed is 7). I really like the book. It presents just the right amount of info.

But, it has tons of errors. The Chap. 1 pretest of 100 questions had 4 errors. It's like it wasn't even proofread. I understand it's been superseded by 2 editions. But, how does a book have that many basic math errors after *five* editions? What did the 1st edition look like?

If you are weak at math like I am, this book is a must-have. It starts you out with the basics of math and works it's way up, giving you much needed review and practice. And it never hurts to have a reference to double check yourself!
