Book Description

7 and up2 and up
This laugh-out-loud sequel to THE CLASSROOM AT THE END OF THE HALL is a witty collection of cautionary tales.

The New-School-Year-Moon hangs above every school the night before it opens. This year it shines over the W.T. Melon Elementary School brighter than ever. And the man in the moon is W.T. Melon himself! There's no doubt that, this year will be full of magical surprises that may teach Morgan, Kate, and the rest of the third graders a lesson or two.

Playground equipment gives a bully a taste of his own medicine, a fairy godteacher grants any wish, a rash breaks out after too much math--these are just a few of the wacky events that unfold in the classroom at the end of the hall.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4-In a world in which adults are identified by description (tall teacher, Playground Lady) or silly names (Mr. Principle the principal, Miss Givings the substitute, Mr. Leeks the custodian), these school stories unfold with an intriguing mix of fantasy and reality. Among the third graders at W. T. Melon Elementary School are Richard, the recognizable bully, who is himself bullied by playground equipment come to life; lazy Andrew whose doodles wreak havoc on the classroom; and chatterbox Morgan, who learns to listen more than she yaks. Each well-written short selection has strong child appeal and is sprinkled with Di Fiori's appealing black-and-white illustrations. Recognizable characters and situations and zany plots will pull young readers in and convey gentle messages. Fans of Louis Sachar's Sideways Stories from Wayside School (Avon, 1985) will enjoy this book.

From Booklist

Gr. 2-4. Homework makes no sense to Hari. Consequently, he eagerly trades one of his five senses to a gnome for doing his lessons. That arrangement works well--until he unwittingly trades away his common sense. The jungle gym, the teeter-totter, and other equipment turn tables on the playground bully; and a mealworm named Bob helps a little girl spell accurately. These are only a few of the wacky takeoffs on third-grade experiences that will have readers laughing out loud. Cleverly disguising lessons on good school behavior in plays on words, fantasy, and humor, these imaginative stories delightfully re-create recognizable school situations and characters. Ellen Mandel

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny School book!!, November 10, 2002
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Math Rashes and Other Classroom Tales (Paperback)
Our teacher read us Classroom at the End of the Hall by Douglas Evans which is the prequel to this book. I thought it was very funny, but Math Rashes is even funnier. The students in this book sound like students in my fifth-grade class. I like the Chatterbox, The Pencil Grinder and the Homework Gnome. All teachers should definately read this book their class!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great sequel!, May 9, 2001
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Math Rashes (Hardcover)
I loved Classroom at The End of the Hall and I loved Math Rashes that includes more stories from W.T. Melon Elementary School. Each story is about a student with some classroom problem. Morgan chatters too much. Richard is a bully, while Mimi is always losing her pencils. In each story magic happens in the classroom to help the students solve their problems. All the magical solutions are very funny. Great for third--fifth grade students!

5.0 out of 5 stars Our whole class liked this book!, November 13, 2000
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Math Rashes (Hardcover)
Our classroom is at the end of the hall and Miss Howard just read us Math Rashes which is a sequel to Classroom At the End of the Hall by Douglas Evans. We thought this book was even better than the first. Our class has a chatterbox and a pencil loser and a boy who complains a lot, and it was very funny reading about the "cures". These books are like the Mrs. Piggle Wiggle books but more up-to-date. So if you want to read a funny book that's about your classroom order math Rashes, and Other Classroom Tales right now!
