3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good starter book for girls about math in 3rd or 4th grade!
Read mixed reviews about the book, but decided to try it out for my daughter whom has some issues about math. My daughter is not that interested in the book and it is below her level for 5th grade. I think this book is better suited for 3rd or 4th grade girls.

I got this for my 5th grade daughter. She was not having a very easy time in math and I was looking for anything to help. We both loved this book. It teaches both math and math study skills. She greatly enjoyed the book and was happy to read 5 or so pages a day to get all the way through the book. Though I certainly can't give total credit to this book, it deserves at least part of the credit for my daughter's improved outlook toward math.

This book tops out at 5th Grade and maybe is a stretch by 5th Grade for the actual math tips being enlightening tips. I like the study suggestions which I think apply way into middle school but a lot of the "tricks" are more 3rd and 4th Grade Math. Wish it had more pages and content. I love the American girl series because my kids will actually read them even if the subject is not what they would have chosen to begin with. This is definitely not the best of the series only because of what they left out, not of what they put in.

Math is more than an academic exercise. Math is a survival skill.

So many girls seem to have a resistance to the subject, missing out on a great feeling of accomplishment. This is a subject at which anyone can excell, if the information is presented in the correct way.

Math Smarts: Tips, Tricks, and Secrets for Making Math More Fun is everything that the title promises and so much more. It will equip students for life!

My nine year was unsure how she felt about the subject of math. I bought this book hoping it would give her some tips. It did give her tips and she liked reading it. She now says that math is one of her favorite subjects.

4.0 out of 5 stars A few mathematical misses in this very good, girl-friendly collection of "tips, tricks and secrets for making math more fun.", July 30, 2011
This review is from: Math Smarts: Tips, Tricks, and Secrets for Making Math More Fun! (American Girl Library) (Paperback)
This small (64 page), computer-illustrated book geared towards girls does what its subheading says; however, in a couple of places, a little editing would have made it more mathematically correct. Divided into six chapters, the volume covers such math-related topics as: its importance in many different fields, study suggestions based on "different types of study smarts," general study strategies, test-taking tips, step-by-step instructions for a real world problem-determining the number of gallons of paint required to paint the walls of your room, balancing a checkbook, math fact strategies and more. Also included is a handy multiplication and division chart up to 12s. All in all, it's a pretty good book that would have been even better with a few edits:

On page 35 in the Reverse It section, it would have been helpful instead to mention that multiplication is "commutative" and define the word.

On page 38, it says, "Division is just multiplication backwards."
Children (even young ones) can handle actual mathematical terms! Better would have been, "Division is the inverse of multiplication."

Page 40 shows a technique for determining primes, but does not give credit where credit is due. The technique (algorithm) is called the sieve of Eratosthenes, and the author should have indicated so.

In summary, good stuff for girls but in a few places the author should have given kids more credit for their ability to handle the proper mathematical terms. Better: Help Your Kids with Math by DK Publishing.
