Product Description

Coding Farmers is the first ever board game to teach real programming concepts to children as young as 7 years old. This innovative and ground-breaking game exposes kids to a language used widely by both students and software engineers, the Java Programming language. Made by kids, for kids, we can guarantee it'll be fun to play and learn! Increasing difficulty levels also encourage young students to learn programming while keeping the game fresh and exciting no matter how many times it is played. Children play the game with action cards, which describe an action, like "move forward by two spaces" in two ways: regular English, and Java code. By playing the game several times, kids learn to connect their actions with written code. They become programming literate all while having a blast - rolling a dice, maneuvering around obstacles and chatting with their friends and family. The aim of the game is to show kids that computers aren't doing "voodoo magic" when they run programs; they are simply doing simple operations, like addition and subtraction, and making choices. In this game, kids quickly learn to gain an appreciation for how powerful and simple programming can be.

I lucked out and found this while browsing kickstarter one day. It ended up being the very first project that I backed. I was actually the very first backer of this project as well because I found it early, and I felt strongly about what they are trying to accomplish with this. I believe that if more kids (and adults) took lessons or classes in programming, it could help them out further down the line. It teaches you to use logic and strategy, which a lot of kids lack these days.

As far the game itself, it is great. I loved it. My 8 year old son loves it. It is simple and easy to play, and teaches not only programming concepts, but strategy. You have to pick the card that works best for where you are on the board. The rules are few, and can easily be adapted to different game play styles if your wanted. My family loves board games and table top games already, and this was a great addition to the collection. If you want a game that you can learn to play in less than 5 minutes, that is also really fun, and also allows you to learn something useful as well, then I highly recommend you pick this up. You are not going to learn everything there is about programming with this, but you are not supposed to. It gives a great introduction to programming logic and concepts, and how things are handled in a program, and gives a great foundation to continue building on.

In a nutshell, the students loved it! I tried it with different age groups at my school, and although some students found it easier and more enjoyable than others, the general consensus of our students and teachers is that this is a game with a high educational value.

Our third graders did not do so well with CodingFarmers, because, and this is my personal belief after hours of observation, they were having problems juggling several high-order concepts at the same time. For instance, they were having trouble analyzing the situation when they had two conditional statements cards to choose from, and deciding what would be best for them to do in the long run. I did not try it, but I think if I were to remove the high-order cards cards when I introduce the game to them, and gradually adding them to the mix, they would do much better.
Our fourth graders did much better, and I believe that if they would have the chance to play the game 2-3 times, they would enjoy it and understand it even better.
However, in my humble opinion, the game shows its strength with 5th grade+ students. It took our 5th graders 15 min to master the objective of the game, the reason why they were playing the game, AND make the connections between CodingFarmers and working on the computer on websites like code.org. I believe that the game can be a great addition in any upper elementary, middle school, or high school classroom. It allows students to explore basic programming concepts, and learn several Java commands before they even work on the computer. Coding Farmers does that, while cutting screen time and fostering socialization, which is pretty impressive.

We got this game for our son as a present from a recommendation by a friend. The game was delivered on time and packaging was done very well. The game delivers the promise of computer programming language concepts (loops, logic statements etc.,) with easy to understand cards. Our son was able to understand the basic and advanced coding "principles" through dice rolls and conversations with us. Overall we recommend to this board to kids intestested in getting into computer programming.

One of the best games out there for kids to learn the basics of programming while playing.
Kids learn best, while having fun.

The one thing that stands out about it is that as kids get good with the basics of the game, they can 'graduate' to play with just the java cards, and this is what makes them understand the basics a little more!

A very well designed board game!
