Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

This book is designed to help a variety of readers bridge the gap between arithmetic and algebra. Slightly more rigorous than most arithmetic books -- but not as difficult or comprehensive as elementary algebra books -- it uses an innovative, integrated arithmetic/algebra approach that develops algebraic skills using "small steps," spirals topics throughout, emphasizes that algebra rules are just an extension of arithmetic, and teaches readers the specific study skills necessary to accommodate their individual learning styles -- including skills for "translating" the language of mathematics into plain English. Covers: Addition and Subtraction of Whole Number Expressions. Multiplication and division of Whole Number Expressions. Signed Numbers. Fractions and Ratio and Proportion. Equations and Polynomials. Fractional Expressions. Decimals and Percents and Radical Expressions. Graphing and Statistics. Measurement and Geometric Figures. For those with math anxiety or frustration who need to make the transition from arithmetic to algebra. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I am taking in online class and this was the required text book. It worked well for someone basically trying to learn this on her own. It give a lot of examples and lot's or practice problems. The only problem is, unless you have the teachers addition you won't know if your doing the practice problem correctly.

This edition is supposed to have a code to get into: MyMathLab. An online course area that will tell you your doing it wrong, give you lots of practice, give hints, show videos and show pages of textbook to help you learn. My copy did not have this for some reason and I had to buy it on my own.

I have been below average in Math for most of my life but thanks to Prealgebra by Blair, Tobey and Slater my grade went up considerably. I managed to maintain a B average thanks to this comprehensive and easy to follow book. It set a steady foundation for me. Thanks

This book is perfect! The shipping was fast, and the quality of the book is high. The Lial series of math books are wonderful, they have wonderful explanations, and are visually appealing. The books are made with community colleges in mind, but they work wonderfully for my 7th grade homeschooled child. Thank you!

This book is great for the students who are just starting to learn Algebra. It has excellent examples and shows step by step instruction on how to work a problem. It even came with a CD for the MyMathLab which is an excellent tool to do your homework online and also helps to guide you step by step.

This book is wonderful. I love that it has online lectures that you can watch to go along with it and videos with examples of how to do everything! I am terrible at math but this helps me to understand it much easier than in the past.

Being that it has been more years than I care to confess to since I took a math class and am pursuing my Bachelor's after all these years, I decided that I needed to review Pre-Algebra before taking an intermediate Algebra class this upcoming semester.

This book is well-structured and explains in just enough detail what steps need to be taken with clarity. Even if math is not your favorite class, this book will help ease the pain.
