This is an important contribution to the history of mathematics. It makes several corrections and additions to scant amount of biographical information of the mathematician Janos Bolyai available in the English language. However its greatest contribution is to provide new insight into Bolyai's later years which were previously believed to be largely unproductive in terms of mathematics. Kiss has found that Bolyai remained an active researcher until the end of his life, and made original contributions to number theory, algebraic equations, and other subjects, many of which were years ahead of his time (much like Bolyai's work in geometry). In an historical sense I rank this book with Bertand Rusell's tome about Leibniz's philosophy, much of which remained unpublished in Leibniz's lifetime and was only discovered in his voluminous notes after his death.
