It is difficult to reach a balance between the rigorous mathematical approach and the normal day-to-day engineering oriented appraoch to control application. This book attempts to strike a balance between the mathematics and the engineering. It is intended that the students have had one class in complex analysis and perhaps one in ordinary differential equations. It is aimed at the junior and senior level university students in engineering, particularly electrical engineering.

While providing sufficient mathematical theory to give the student a reasonable background, the book uses MATLAB and the Control System Toolbox as aids in the actual design and analysis. It does not allow MATLAB knowledge to substiture for engineering knowledge.

The first seven chapters of the book cover classical control theory, and is probably suited for a one semester class. The next chapters cover an introduction to nonlinear control, modern control, and the control of hybrid systems.

The author is a professor at the Jerusalem College of Technology, Israel.
