A successful attempt to describe the breadth of mathematics,
By Charles Ashbacher (Marion, Iowa United States) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: A Mathematical Mosaic: Patterns & Problem Solving (Revised Edition) (Perfect Paperback)
Mathematics is an enormously broad subject and in this book the author attempts to describe to the reader how broad it is. By putting forth short statements about a large number of topics, the great range and practice of mathematics is demonstrated. Depth is not present and that was in no way the intent of the author but there is enough to generate interest in the mind prepared to receive it.
The general sections are *) Number theory *) Combinatorics *) The Fibonacci sequence *) Game theory *) Geometry *) Chessboard coloring *) Infinity *) Concepts in calculus *) Complex numbers short biographies of great figures in the history of mathematics as well as recent prodigies are also included. This is a book that young people that have shown an interest in mathematics should be encouraged to explore. At that point in their lives, they have many general interests and if they are destined to enter the mathematical life, they should find something here that will turn their interest into a specific one. Professional mathematicians that enjoy scanning areas outside their focus will also find it useful, especially if they are looking for topics for the classes they teach.
