One of the principal goals of this text is to impart a positive attitude to those who aspire to be elementary or middle school teachers. With a positive attitude toward mathematics comes confidence and an increased willingness to learn the mathematical content, skills, and effective teaching techniques necessary to become a competent teacher of mathematics. To that end, the content and processes of mathematics are presented in an appealing and logical matter with three principal goals in mind: to develop positive attitudes towards mathematics and mathematics teaching, to develop mathematical knowledge and skills, and to develop students as competent mathematics teaching professionals.

He has also served as an invited speaker at international, national, and regional mathematics education meetings including at least 150 presentations at national and regional meetings of  NCTM and state affiliates.  Cal has conducted numerous in-service programs for elementary, middle school, and high school teachers and has directed numerous summer institutres for teachers, served as educational consultant for the National Science Foundation, for the National Assessment of Educational Progress, and for the Washington State Superintendent of Public Instruction.  He also served on numerous committees for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Mathematical Association of America, including committees that drew up guidelines for the mathematical preparation of teachers.

Duane DeTemple received his BS degree in Applied Science from Portland State college, and went on to earn his MS and Ph. D. in mathematics from Stanford University. He has been on the mathematics faculty at Washington State University since 1970, where he became a full professor in 1985.

His research productivity includes nearly 100 papers in analysis, geometric probability, geometry, combinatorics, graph theory, and curriculum materials for K-12 classrooms. He was Boeing Distinguished Professor of Science and Mathematics Education for 2000-2002.

Dr. DeTemple's family is also committed to teaching: his wife Janet teaches violin, his daughter Jill is completing her Ph. D. in religious studies at the University of North Carolina, and his younger daughter Rachel is a high school English teacher. 4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful, March 10, 1999
By A Customer
I would recommend this book for anyone intrested in teaching younger children mathmatics. It starts on the basics such as addition and goes through geometery. It is very helpful in reminding adults how to do some basic math that we might have forgot. I used this book two semesters in a row at CSU Stainislaus. There isn't a single Liberal Study major who hasn't used this book. This book has "Highlights from History" that tell you about the people that created the different math ideas. "Hands On" gives you fun math activities to try and pieces from the NCTM standards and many more helpful articles throughout the chapters. This book makes teaching math intresting for you and the children you teach it to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Right now, it tops my list of potential texts for a course in mathematics for el ed majors, July 8, 2008
Once every two or three years I am pressed into service teaching the course "Fundamentals of Arithmetic and Logic." The course is designed to give elementary school teachers the background in mathematics that they need. This book is designed for that course, which is the context in which I examined it.
The coverage is standard for such courses, nearly identical to what we cover in our course. The chapter headings are:

*) Thinking critically
*) Sets and whole numbers
*) Numeration and computation
*) Number theory
*) Integers
*) Fractions and rational numbers
*) Decimals, real numbers and proportional reasoning
*) Algebraic reasoning and representation
*) Statistics: The interpretation of data
*) Probability
*) Geometric figures
*) Measurement: Length, area, and volume
*) Transformations, symmetries, and tilings
*) Congruence, constructions, and similarity

This book has a large number of colored illustrations, which is a big help over the uniform black on white format. I am constantly using multi-colored chalk or whiteboard markers in my presentations for math and computer science. There are a large number of exercises at the ends of the chapters and solutions to many are included at the end.
Unlike some other books, there is not a lot of ink expended in covering technological applications. I never use a calculator when I am teaching the fundamentals class and I consider this a positive characteristic of the book. These students need to understand the theory behind these operations and calculators can often disguise what is really being done
I do not know if and when I will teach our fundamentals class again, our math and computer science departments are in a dramatic state of unpredictability. However, at this time, this book tops my list of potential texts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Elementary Teaching Mathematics, February 17, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
February 17, 2012

I have recently purchase both Edition 4 and Edition 5 Mathematical Reasoning for Elementary Teachers at Amazon. I feel that both of those textbooks have similar content of learning and teaching the math concept to children. I believe whole-heartedly that teachers must know what materials and methods that children is using to learn math concept, especially to get them learning the right way. College students using and learning mathematical Reasoning for Elementary Teachers are getting prepare and imparting the skill to become elementary school teachers.
