This text is designed for the one or two semester course for pre-service elementary education teachers. Using a highly interactive approach, Sonnabend prepares students for teaching elementary mathematics and provides insight into the underlying concepts behind elementary school mathematics. The text includes coverage of problem-solving, reasoning, sets, arithmetic, geometry, measurement, algebra, computers, statistics, and probability. Sonnabend's well organized lesson format encourages students to participate in the development and explanation of concepts establishing a solid understanding of mathematics. Features: * The text is accessible to students and closely reflects current content, approaches, and technology in the elementary school mathematics classroom. * Extensive exercise sets contain a wide range of interesting problems involving students in reasoning, investigating, and communicating. New to this edition: * New Topics and Terms in lessons offer more options for instructors. * Introductory probability begins with experiments and is then followed by rules, helping students develop concepts from hands-on activities. * Updated Technology Coverage, including fraction calculators, spreadsheets, drawing software, and graphing calculators reflects current practices in the elementary school. * Increased coverage of the history of mathematics and women in mathematics. * Expanded coverage of the van Hiele model will help the students familiarize themselves with a useful pedagogical model. * Estimation now preceeds computation in the sections on decimals and percents. * Lesson Exercises marked for group work or whole class discussion. * Basic homework exercises are reorganized so the professor can initially assign the odd-marked exercises. * More detailed Answers and Solutions to Lesson Exercises provide helpful feedback to students.
