About the Author

Robert D. Smith was an associate professor emeritus of Industrial Technology at Connecticut State University.

John C. Peterson is a retired professor of mathematics at Chattanooga State Technical Community College, where he received the college's Teaching Excellence Award. In addition, he is a past vice president of the American Mathematical Association for Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) and was co-director of the AMATYC project on Mathematics for the Emerging Technologies funded by the National Science Foundation. He also authored the project report, A Vision: Mathematics for the Emerging Technologies. Dr. Peterson's 90 professional publications include textbooks TECHNICAL MATHEMATICS and INTRODUCTORY TECHNICAL MATHEMATICS. He holds Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from the University of Northern Iowa and a doctor of philosophy degree in mathematics education from The Ohio State University.

Temple College in Temple, Texas was awarded a $600K Grant to update the skills of the workers in industry. The math skills of the existing and new employees are exceptionally low. The difference between normal math as I call it and the aproach of the "Mathematics for Machine Technology" is that the students do not know where to apply the math that they have learned. With Mathematics for Machine Technology the aproach is applied mathmatics. This math is applied every day in the industry and now the math becomes functional. This is a great teaching aid to use by itself or to complement the math that is now being taugh. I bring measuring instruments such as verniers, caliphers, micromenters and others into the teaching enviroment to stress where the math is used.

BMAP Member Manufacturing companies decided to make this the first class we teach to our Yr 1 apprenticeship students. The reason is that they don't have time to teach all of the basic machining math to new employees. And the people who are looking for jobs these days have either never learned it, or they have learned it quite a while ago, as all ages of persons are in the class.

Tremendous value for the money. Bookbyte always sends a better quality book than you expect. I think I paid about 1/3 the price of a new book. Other than a few pages where the corners were bent and a few others with pencil notations, the book was in perfect shape. It's going to be used in a machine shop, not on a coffee table.

I don't know if they're all this way or not but there are some serious typos on some of the equations. If you aren't being tutored, that's something you might not catch and could end up stumped without good cause, or learning how to do things the wrong way. However, with a good instructor, it does the trick.

I do not recommend this book for private study. And, after reading some of the other reviews about missing or incorrect content, I probably would not recommend it for purchase - period. The problem I have with the book is that I discovered that the even number quizes do not have answers provided in the answer section of the book. I contacted the publisher about this problem and was told that they could not give me the answers to the even numbered test sections; to imply that only the instructor materials will have the answer. Now, to get around that problem I would either have to be an authorized instructor or become a student. Without all of the answers to the quizes I can only test myself on half of the subject matter. The instructor materials should be considered ADDITIONAL/SEPARATE training aids to the course of study. It should be the Instructors decision as to how to test; not the publisher. In my opinion the only reason I see for the publisher to not including all answers is to drive up the cost by forcing me to have to attend some formalized class which in turn forces the school to purchase the instructor materials just to allow me to have access to the full benefits of the reference book that I've already paid full retail price. So, now I'm stuck with this over priced substand book.
