About the Author

Robert D. Smith was an associate professor emeritus of Industrial Technology at Connecticut State University.

John C. Peterson, Ph.D., is a retired professor of mathematics at Chattanooga State Technical Community College, where he received the college's Teaching Excellence Award. Dr. Peterson is a past vice president of the American Mathematical Association for Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) and was co-director of the AMATYC project on Mathematics for the Emerging Technologies funded by the National Science Foundation. He also authored the project report, A Vision: Mathematics for the Emerging Technologies. Among Dr. Peterson's 90 professional publications are the textbooks TECHNICAL MATHEMATICS and INTRODUCTORY TECHNICAL MATHEMATICS. Dr. Peterson holds Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from the University of Northern Iowa and a doctor of philosophy degree in mathematics education from The Ohio State University.

Temple College in Temple, Texas was awarded a $600K Grant to update the skills of the workers in industry. The math skills of the existing and new employees are exceptionally low. The difference between normal math as I call it and the aproach of the "Mathematics for Machine Technology" is that the students do not know where to apply the math that they have learned. With Mathematics for Machine Technology the aproach is applied mathmatics. This math is applied every day in the industry and now the math becomes functional. This is a great teaching aid to use by itself or to complement the math that is now being taugh. I bring measuring instruments such as verniers, caliphers, micromenters and others into the teaching enviroment to stress where the math is used.

This book is great as far as textbooks go, great practical examples of problems from the machine shop, good insturctions, covers a wide range, I bought it for the trig and geometery.

Tremendous value for the money. Bookbyte always sends a better quality book than you expect. I think I paid about 1/3 the price of a new book. Other than a few pages where the corners were bent and a few others with pencil notations, the book was in perfect shape. It's going to be used in a machine shop, not on a coffee table.
