Book Description

The Rubik's cube has been fascinating people for years, and there have been many books written on mathematical expositions or how to solve the cube. The aim of "Mathematics of the Rubik's Cube Design" is to develop an algorithm for constructing a composite design made from Rubik's cubes. The basic idea is very simple: Take Rubik's cubes and produce synchronized, color patterns on them, and then stack them together so that they form a composite, continuous design showing all six faces exhibiting continuity and geometrical symmetry. It sounds easy? Try it!

About the Author

Hana M. Bizek was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia and lived in South Bohemia. Upon coming to the United States, her work has take her to San Francisco, the Midwest, and Texas. Dr. Bizek earned her doctorate in theoretical physics from Purdue University and is currently working as a computational and theoretical accelerator physicist in the Advanced Photon Source Project at the Argonne National Laboratory in Argonne, Illinois. Dr. Bizek was prompted to write "Mathematics of the Rubik's Cube Design" by reading books about the cube that claim it is impossible to solve and that it is a threat to humankind's mental equilibrium. Rather than visualizing a bunch of messed-up cubes, she began thinking of building a wall of patterned cubes that would produce an overall, three-dimensional design. She picked up her cubes and started twiddling. Dr. Bizek's special interests are puzzles (of course), literature, architecture, and interior design. "Mathematics of the Rubik's Cube Design" is her first published work.
