4.0 out of 5 stars Hands-On Activities for Concrete Learning, June 11, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Mathematics Their Way, Spiral-bound Teacher guide plus Blackline Masters (Spiral-bound)
Parents and teachers looking for ways to help children understand math -- both in their early years and as the concepts become more abstract -- will do well to start with the exercises herein. Kids internalize the concepts by discovering principles of mathematics (and science) on their own. Material requirements give a purpose to those seemingly useless odds and ends the children won't allow you to throw away.

Children should probably not be allowed to do pencil-and-paper math before doing the exercises in this book. Algebra and geometry teachers would certainly have an easier time of it if this book were universally applied.

5.0 out of 5 stars Math Their Way is the way to help students master mathematics, December 28, 2008

Math Their Way is a fantastic book. Students who are taught using these lessons have the best foundation in number sense and computation. This program has been used for many years in an elementary school that has students who outscore other schools in all state math assessments! The menipulatives used are easy and inexpensive...shells, bolts, lima beans. Follow this math teaching with "Mathematics...A Way of Thinking".

I bought this for my daughter who is homeschooling her children and on a limited budget. MTW is a fantastic resource, using inexpensive manipulatives, and giving young children a concrete base for their mathematics learning. My copy was well used when I retired, so I was thrilled to find a new copy for my daughter and her boys.

Simply the best early maths book I've found. Starts with teaching pattern to children in really concrete ways. My kindies needed a lesson on recognition of same and different first but have gone on from strength to strength from there.

Great developmental activities! The scope and sequence is easy to follow and the activities can be easily tailored K-1 (maybe 2nd).
