Some lovely music, November 23, 2009

I am giving this CD 4 stars rather than 5 stars because whilst I like Mathias' music, his music is not transcendent/mystical for me. Even so, I was particularly taken with the organ pieces, the Missa Brevis, the Ave Verum Corpus (definitely influenced by french music) and All Wisdom is from the Lord. The latter piece is commented upon in the sleeve note as being in the style of the Lord of the Rings and it is. It very much preempts some of the music associated with the elves. There are some chripy pieces (such as Let the People praise thee O God) but they appealed less to me. I would like to see Polyphony take a crack at this music -perhaps it would then appeal more.
