The Joshua Light Show in your Living Room,

This review is from: Mathmos Space Projector - Blue-Green (Personal Computers)
The Mathmos Space Projector uses old technology, projecting moving images of colored oils on your wall. But what images! The color combinations are well chosen (a number of differently colored oil wheels are available), and the unit itself is attractive and well made. I have had the Space Projector on duty for several years now, and the only repair I've had to make is to replace the halogen bulb. Though Amazon says a room with subdued lighting is best, I find the image bright enough to see on a wall ten feet across the room from the projector. About my only gripe is I wish the projector had an on/off switch; you have to pull the plug out to turn it off. In every other respect, though, it's a great psychedelic light for parties and raves... Now Mathmos has also made available some graphics wheels, which substitute artists' designs for the oils, complemented by colored slides. Nice -- I like the op art effect produced by the Mirage wheel. No reason to let space remain a frontier any longer!

I tried making oil wheels before, with some success. I bought this and it was much easier and much better looking.I recently hacked together a DIY oil wheel template for this, I measured some plastic piping and used some fiber glass and rubber cement with some colored oils I found at a hobby store. Its not as professional looking but its still pretty awesome

In years past, I have owned a few of these types of projectors, all really cheaply made, and never worked very well.Knowing Mathmos makes the world's highest quality lava lamps, and owning several of their other very well made products, I decided, what the heck, it's a little expense, lets try it, you get what you pay for! This Mathmos design is very much like the cheap ones, with some major differences. For one, yes it is plastic, but it is very well made, the color wheels are notched on the inside where it makes contact with the motor gears (something the old cheap ones did not bother with) so it rotates nice and evenly. The focus works well, and it depends on how far the projector is from your wall as to how large the image will be (duh!! that's obvious dude!!:). The cord is quite long, but the AC/DC transformer is very large and heavy, and NO ON/OFF switch. The 2 prong US standard plug will take up alot of real estate on a power strip, so I have a small 4 inlet power strip with a power switch so I can control the projector with that. I have 2 color wheels, a red one, and a green. The green one is great for relaxing yourself to sleep. Just turn out all the lights in your room, get nice and comfy in bed, make sure you have your power strip on a timer (you can not run this projector more than 8hours, overheating, I recommend only 6 hours) and just let the hypnotic fluid motion melt away all the worries of the day, and drift off into sleepyland :) The red one is great for, err... kind of mind expanding, 60's style. Just add a little Jimmy Hendrix, a few lava lamps, black lights and the recreational substance of your choice ;) I give this product 5 stars, even though I have no idea if it will still work a year from now, I do know that Mathmos has paid attention to the fine details, and am fairly confident that this projector will last. Highly recommended, weather you are a child of the 60's or not ;) Peace man :)
