Matias USB 2.0 Keyboard,

I've been using the Matias USB 2.0 on a MacMini for a month now, and it is an excellent choice. I've been using an old Apple Extended for years but a key is sticking. I heard that the Matias version ($149) is awesome, but it's beyond my price range. So I decided to try the Matias USB 2 instead and the results have been impressive with nothing derogatory to report. It is very responsive and compares favorably to the old Apple board, which has a great feel but really clacks loudly. The Matias USB 2 is not only a satisfactory replacement, but it's also a lot quieter. Plus, the version I ordered comes with a matching mouse. Good deal.

Some of the peculiarities of this keyboard have been mentioned, but how odd is it that it has two USB cables, and that both must be attached? Why do I want a keyboard to gobble up two USB ports (which happen, on some Macs, to be the ONLY USB ports). This ridiculous setup is to activate the USB 2.0 dock on top of the board for high-speed devices. I don't want to be compelled to attach high-speed devices to my keyboard -- I want to primarily attach them to my computer. With the Matias hogging both USB ports on a MacBook Pro, where am I supposed to plug in a hard drive? This is engineering without recognition of reality. Perhaps I can connect just one of the USB cables and exclude the dock, but the manual doesn't say; and that leaves one cable unattractively dangling. The original Apple keyboard comes with a USB extension cable, but the Matias isn't compatible with the Apple extension cable and therefore doesn't reach as far, unless you buy TWO generic USB extension cables. I need more cables like a hole...

Beautiful execution, cushioned, speed loving response from keys, best keyboard I never knew I always needed since 1980 when I started owning Apple. ipod Dock on Keyboard and 2 each 2.0 USB ports. Needs twin 2.0 USB ports on computer (or hub?) to work at maximum speed.Sadly I almost didn't buy, due to the only review here, which was super negative. But I did the thing right, traveled the Internet for other reviews, and learned other points of view. My only puzzlement is why keyboard doesn't respond on some startups so I disconnect and reconnect twin USB connectors to computer. May be more convenient to connect to a hub on desk as this happens about every 6th startup. Tech support, Cananda, is very responsive. I suspect they are like the Maytag repairman ad that used to be on TV....they probably don't have much work to do. Its a great product.
