5.0 out of 5 stars Matias USB 2.0 Keyboard
I've been using the Matias USB 2.0 on a MacMini for a month now, and it is an excellent choice. I've been using an old Apple Extended for years but a key is sticking. I heard that the Matias version ($149) is awesome, but it's beyond my price range. So I decided to try the Matias USB 2 instead and the results have been impressive with nothing derogatory to report. Some of the peculiarities of this keyboard have been mentioned, but how odd is it that it has two USB cables, and that both must be attached? Why do I want a keyboard to gobble up two USB ports (which happen, on some Macs, to be the ONLY USB ports). I heard that the Matias version ($149) is awesome, but it's beyond my price range. So I decided to try the Matias USB 2 instead and the results have been impressive with nothing derogatory to report. It is very responsive and compares favorably to the old Apple board, which has a great feel but really clacks loudly. The Matias USB 2 is not only a satisfactory replacement, but it's also a lot quieter. Plus, the version I ordered comes with a matching mouse. Good deal.

Some of the peculiarities of this keyboard have been mentioned, but how odd is it that it has two USB cables, and that both must be attached? Why do I want a keyboard to gobble up two USB ports (which happen, on some Macs, to be the ONLY USB ports). This ridiculous setup is to activate the USB 2.0 dock on top of the board for high-speed devices. I don't want to be compelled to attach high-speed devices to my keyboard -- I want to primarily attach them to my computer. With the Matias hogging both USB ports on a MacBook Pro, where am I supposed to plug in a hard drive? This is engineering without recognition of reality. Perhaps I can connect just one of the USB cables and exclude the dock, but the manual doesn't say; and that leaves one cable unattractively dangling. The original Apple keyboard comes with a USB extension cable, but the Matias isn't compatible with the Apple extension cable and therefore doesn't reach as far, unless you buy TWO generic USB extension cables. I need more cables like a hole...

5.0 out of 5 stars Cadillac of wired keyboard/mouse combos for Mac, January 9, 2007

Beautiful execution, cushioned, speed loving response from keys, best keyboard I never knew I always needed since 1980 when I started owning Apple. ipod Dock on Keyboard and 2 each 2.0 USB ports. Needs twin 2.0 USB ports on computer (or hub?) to work at maximum speed.

Sadly I almost didn't buy, due to the only review here, which was super negative. But I did the thing right, traveled the Internet for other reviews, and learned other points of view.

My only puzzlement is why keyboard doesn't respond on some startups so I disconnect and reconnect twin USB connectors to computer. May be more convenient to connect to a hub on desk as this happens about every 6th startup. Tech support, Cananda, is very responsive. I suspect they are like the Maytag repairman ad that used to be on TV....they probably don't have much work to do. Its a great product.

Great keyboard. Good price from Amazon. No unsolvable problems with its use with my Mac. I have not used the mouse as I prefer a tablet/mouse system. I would have allotted a 5 star rating except for the lack of information with the keyboard and response from Matias regarding questions I had on the use of the board. If you are knowledgable of keyboards, you should have no heavy problems.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overall good keyboard, August 10, 2010
This review is from: Matias Usb 2.0 Keyboard & Mouse White Ma (Electronics)
Ordered this keyboard for my boss, who likes the traditional, big keyboards (not the slim Mac keyboards that Apple is selling now). Personally, I found it to noisy when typing, but I use the new, slim Mac keyboard which is very quiet. My boss was quite happy with the keyboard except for the placement of the caps lock key. It is in a very unusual location (lower right of keyboard near the ctrl-alt keys). For that reason alone, he got a different keyboard. If you don't use caps lock much and like more traditional, big keyboards, I recommend this one, especially for Mac users. Setup was easy, and having that high-speed USB port on the keyboard was very handy. Overall a good keyboard for the money!

4.0 out of 5 stars Works as advertised, May 27, 2009

I have a new iMac but the keyboard that comes standard with the computer did not work for me ergonomically--if you're constantly thinking about the keyboard and how uncomfortable it is, obviously it's not doing its job. I always have preferred the classic Mac keyboards, so went looking for something comparable. I was surprised by the limited options available for alternative keyboards (esp. affordable ones) for Macs, but came across this one. Did a lot of research and decided to take the plunge.

I'm fully satisfied by the product. The keyboard solved my ergonomic problem, and worked perfectly fine both on the iMac and when working in the Windows XP environment through Parallels Desktop.

I, too, have experienced the problem another reviewer has noted, in that the computer periodically does not recognize the keyboard. But simply unplugging and plugging back in the USB connectors solves the problem.

Understand the complaint of needing 2 USB ports, but this is not a "hidden" feature, and something a user should easily become aware of while checking the specs of the product prior to purchase. Though I use a USB hub since I use several peripherals due to my graphics work, having the spare USB 2.0 connector on the keyboard is a nice convenience.

In the two 1.0 USB ports, I plugged in a mouse plus a drawing tablet, and was surprised that both worked fine, so I can keep the drawing tablet permanently attached to the computer.

While I recognize this is not a "high end" keyboard, for the price it certainly works perfectly fine and I'm glad to have a keyboard that does exactly what it's supposed to, and keeps my comfortable.

A real piece of junk:

This is marketed as a MAC keyboard but who needs 2 CONTROL keys, one above the other?

The SPACE bar is all crooked: higher on one end then on the other.

The TAB key is sunken down from all the other keys.

No CAPS LOCK key. WTF

It feels like I'm typing on a Commodore 64 keyboard and frequently double tyypess.

DO NOT BUY THIS piece of junk - get a real Apple Mac keyboard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just make sure you have 2 free USB ports on your computer, July 1, 2010

Best keybaord I ever used. I love how the keys have the graphics so I know what to press.

LOVE that the ALL CAPS key was moved to the right side and is out of the way

The keyboard feels nice when you type.

Having the 2.0 USB port on the top of the keyboard is so convenient.

I can't say enough about this keyboard. Ironically, on Amazon buying the Keyboard + Mouse COMBO was LESS EXPENSIVE than buying JUST the same keyboard LOL.

Otherwise, this product ROCKS!

2.0 out of 5 stars A bit flimsy, January 7, 2009
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Matias Usb 2.0 Keyboard & Mouse White Ma (Electronics)
I'm not well schooled in computer hardware, so my concerns about this product
are not about USB ports or whatever. I was unhappy at how light and flimsy this keyboard was in comparison with other Mac keyboards I have used. When it arrived about a dozen of the key tiles had come loose and had to be snapped back on. Also it feels as if I am typing on some kiddie toy rather than an Apple product. I bought this combo to accompany my MacBook when I travel, but now I'm worried about tile attrition and keyboarding frustration.
