This review is from: Matisse (Twentieth Century Masters) (Hardcover)
The essay is a worthwhile essay on an artist with a long career. For a shorter account of Matisse this book is a good choice . Albert Barnes, Alfred Barr, Pierre Schneider all have mote detailed analysis. The text doesn't have seisquipedelian words ,that you find especially in the Schneider book. The best books include the artist statement about his art.Jack Flamm's Matisse's theories is the best bet.Matisse is not only one of the greats of 20th century art :he is one of the most articulate of the period.Matisse studied law and an attribute I have found characteristic of legal training; for the most part lawyers choose their words carefully. The reproductions are good and most are in color. For a new book under ten dollars this is well worth the price.A good book to start your library of works on Matisse.
