There are many solid, driving-down-the-dusty-road-in-an-old-convertible tracks on this disc; producer Don Smith (Tom Petty, U2, Bob Dylan) knows how to give the band an open field and the space to cruise through it. The track "What Are We Gonna Do Come the Month of September" is a perfect example with its wonderfully expansive Hammond organ-infused groove. The seven-minute-plus track, peaking with a two minute, perfectly languid exit, allows the players their chance to express a mood, and the audience their chance to feel it, without being rushed by the confines of pops three-minute radio rule. Torontos Now Magazine recently named Mays "Canadas most promising roots rock tunesmith," admittedly, the amazingly-talented Kathleen Edwards is also very deserving of that title, but as symmetry would have it, she joins Mays as co-vocalist on "The Plan", adding extra oomph to a track that deserves to be an outside-the-box radio hit this summertime. --Denise Sheppard

Definately a band to watch!,
By Liv (Toronto) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Matt Mays & El Torpedo (Audio CD)
First time I saw Matt Mays and El Torpedo was over a year ago at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto. They're not really my style of music, but when they played a show recently with songs from this album, I was hooked. They've gotten so much attention and rave reviews recently and they totally deserve every bit of it! From start to finish this is one of the best CD's I've ever heard, definitely my favourite Canadian band right now. If you can, try and see these guys live. And they are also really nice in person.First single Cocaine Cowgirl is amazing, and other great tracks are St. George's Lane, What Are We Gonna Do Come the Month of September, and On The Hood. Highly recommend this CD!!!!!!!!!!!

I just went to see Matt and the guys play two nights ago for the second time, and I can say I certainly wasn't dissapointed! The first album was great, but the second one is even better! I really suggest "What are we gonna do come the month of september", my favorite song on the album for sure. I told that to the guys the other night, and Jarrett said they've been playing that at every show recently, and it's no wonder why! They're great guys and really deserve to be heard, so pick up the album, every song is amazing!!

Best of the 21st century,
By classicrockteen "Corey" (Canada!!!!!) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Matt Mays & El Torpedo (Audio CD)
This to me is the best band of the 21st century. They have managed to have a true rock n roll sound without a hint of cliche just hard hitting music by a very talented band. They have also brought back the rock side of country rock that has been mostly missing for over 20 years. If you like classic rock pick this one up now this is real the darkness and jet just copys and MM&ET are also probally the most orginal thing around.
