5.0 out of 5 stars Definately a band to watch!
First time I saw Matt Mays and El Torpedo was over a year ago at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto. They're not really my style of music, but when they played a show recently with songs from this album, I was hooked. They've gotten so much attention and rave reviews recently and they totally deserve every bit of it! From start to finish this is one of the best CD's I've...

2.0 out of 5 stars Thank g0d for Cancon regulations...
Matt Mayes and El Torpedo is probably the most overrated band on the Canadian music scene right now. I know so many people who are such huge fans of this band, and I can't figure out why anybody would want to listen to these guys because their music is so dull. Matt Mayes and El Torpedo is a band that you can just take their record and throw it in the garbage...

They've gotten so much attention and rave reviews recently and they totally deserve every bit of it! From start to finish this is one of the best CD's I've ever heard, definitely my favourite Canadian band right now. If you can, try and see these guys live. And they are also really nice in person.
First single Cocaine Cowgirl is amazing, and other great tracks are St. George's Lane, What Are We Gonna Do Come the Month of September, and On The Hood.
Highly recommend this CD!!!!!!!!!!!

I just went to see Matt and the guys play two nights ago for the second time, and I can say I certainly wasn't dissapointed! The first album was great, but the second one is even better! I really suggest "What are we gonna do come the month of september", my favorite song on the album for sure. I told that to the guys the other night, and Jarrett said they've been playing that at every show recently, and it's no wonder why! They're great guys and really deserve to be heard, so pick up the album, every song is amazing!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the 21st century, June 5, 2006
This review is from: Matt Mays & El Torpedo (Audio CD)
This to me is the best band of the 21st century. They have managed to have a true rock n roll sound without a hint of cliche just hard hitting music by a very talented band. They have also brought back the rock side of country rock that has been mostly missing for over 20 years. If you like classic rock pick this one up now this is real the darkness and jet just copys and MM&ET are also probally the most orginal thing around.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, July 6, 2005
This review is from: Matt Mays & El Torpedo (Audio CD)
The cover of this new effort by Halifax's next big thing is very fitting. A sexy blonde behind the wheel of a hotrod out in the open spaces. It is a classic rock album through and through most comparable to early Tom Petty. Don't be fooled however, it does have a very modern sound to it and is not cliche filled. The songs have a good dose of sex, drugs and the whole rock n roll lifestyle but they are also full of quite mature themes as well. Mr Mays is infectious with both his words and his strong vocal style.

I am not a big fan of classic rock but this album will get regular airplay in both my home and car. For a fan of the genre this is a no brainer and much better than some of the other recent youngsters playing this style(Drive By Truckers to name one). Unfortunately, here in the USA anyway, this record will likely fall on deaf ears as nothing this authentic will ever get any airplay. There are hundreds of classic rock stations but they would rather spin a thirty year old record than give someone new a chance.

Give it a chance and you won't be disappointed!

4.0 out of 5 stars See them live., June 23, 2005
This review is from: Matt Mays & El Torpedo (Audio CD)
A very strong follow-up album. The first track is still my favourite but there are gems throughout the disc.

However, the real treat is seeing the band live. They tore the roof off of Lee's palace in June and are a must-see.

Yet another great band from Halifax-Dartmouth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wicked, April 21, 2005
This review is from: Matt Mays & El Torpedo (Audio CD)
After waiting anxiously for a second helping of Matt Mays after I stumbled upon his self-titled first album, I bought ...& El Torpedo soon as I could. This album was more than worth the wait. The first song, Stand Down At Sundown teases you with a glimpse of the insane quality of music on the album. There's a unique familiarity to his music, if that makes sense. It's new old rock. It's layered honest rock that's been missing from the music scene for a while. These guys are gonna be rockin' with The Tragically Hip very soon. Deservedly so, they will become Canadian Rock icons.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cool New Sound, April 8, 2005

Wow, a band with such an original sound doesn't come by often enough. The first song that I heard from Matt Mays & El Torpedo was "City of Lakes". I liked it, but I didn't know the name of the band who sang it. A few months later, I heard "Cocaine Cowgirl" and loved it. I later found out that both songs were from the same artist.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Matt Mays & El Torpedo (Audio CD)
Matt Mayes and El Torpedo is probably the most overrated band on the Canadian music scene right now. I know so many people who are such huge fans of this band, and I can't figure out why anybody would want to listen to these guys because their music is so dull. Matt Mayes and El Torpedo is a band that you can just take their record and throw it in the garbage.

There is only one reason why this band is popular and that's because of the Canadian content regulations the government imposed on the Canadian media back in the '70s. Matt Mays is one of those artists who gets played to death on Canadian radio, not for his talent, but to help the radio station meet its "35% Canadian content" requirements. Matt, all I can say to you is be thankful you come from a country where local music is mandatory, otherwise your career in music would have gone nowhere.
