Outstanding performances by a master,

A French friend of mine went to the first Parisian concert by the Chieftains after their original flautist, Michael Tubridey, retired and was replaced by Matt Molloy. Many of the attendees had been great fans of Tubridey's and weren't sure the change would be for the better. But after Molloy's first solo, my friend avers, they were so astounded they almost forgot to clap. This album will show you why.

The flute at its finest,

This album from 1976 features Matt either accompanied solely by Dónal Lunny, usually on bouzouki; or solo. Both of course are ex Bothy Band, and the musical sympathy between them is total. I prefer this to any other album of Matt's I've heard, fine though many of those are, for the same reason I love Frankie Gavin & Alec Finn: it's a perfect fusion of soloist and accompanist. And so this is certainly the most beautiful flute album I've ever heard. The total time is only 34'21", but I can't bring myself to knock off a star. If you want to show a friend what the Irish is flute is capable of, then play her this. |
